Shade

Shade

Lurking in the shadows, waiting patiently for their prey, a Shade haunts the place of its death. Shades are brought about by dark magic, such as necromancy, or a gruesome death. Individuals who fear death are likely subjects to become shades in the afterlife. The Magical energy of the soul is corrupted by fear, or manipulated by dark magic to become a predator of the night.
Shades are docile during the day, only attacking their victims when the temptation to do so is to hard to withhold. The spiteful creatures live on yearning to kill. Their only satisfaction comes from invoking their vengeance on every living thing that passes. The ghastly figures are not sentient as a human, but embody strong emotions, such as greed, envy, and hate, causing them to lash out in a moments notice. While not common, shades do possess the ability to whisper. This is usually done to distract their prey before they eat their soul, leaving an empty body, and a fracture spirit to become the very thing that destroyed it.   Shades were born out of fear before anything else. They have sense become a common bane to mankind. Killing one's kin is a likely cause, on purpose or by accident, to cause a shade to appear. Such things can spiral out of control leaving nothing but empty husk where humanoids once prevailed. However, despite their danger, there is one thing a shade hates above all else; the sun. If a shade attacks during sunlight, it was only because something had gotten too close to it. If a shade sits in direct sunlight, it's form will soon become ash blowing into the wind. The sun, holds some power over the creature, that makes a shade go crazy. In fact, so much as mimicking sunlight, such as with a torch, will make them lash out with fury, and uncontrollable rage. The dark creatures, like to stay hidden. They rarely will travel beyond a mile of the area of their death, unless they are captured, or re purposed by more powerful force.
A man's best friend against a Shade is often either magic, or a silver blade. Nothing kills shades faster than fire, or radiant energy. If you don't have either on hand, a silver blade covered in salt will do the job just fine. Salt, is the last thing on the list. A shade cannot cross a line of salt. It is said, the only way to cure a fractured soul such as a shade, is to create a circle around the shade where it has died, and wait for the sunrise. Of course, there are some shades that have been dead so long they are irredeemable, these are much stronger, they are known as shadows.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A shade's appearance is minimalist. It holds the silhouette of its form it held in life. It lacks eyes, nose, mouth and ears, though the misty shadowy form shows protrusions where these things were once held.

Genetics and Reproduction

A shade is not a living thing, it cannot produce as other living things do. Instead, a shade, like a living virus, attacks its prey, sprouting up offspring from it's victims. A bond between a parent Shade and its offspring is one of hate and envy, yet they collaboration to bring about more distress and destruction in their given area.
