The Maive Plant
Maive berries are small, purple berries that grant invisibility if ingested. They grow on dark green, short little plants, with black flowers. They are an important part of any adventure, especially ones involving stealth. Unfortunately for rogues and the like, they are extremely rare.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Maive berry plants are very small, growing only about 3 inches high. They have slender, dark green stems, and their leaves are almost triangular in shape. The flowers of the Maive berry plant are black, and their pollen is deep blue, with ink-like, staining properties. The berries themselves are very small, about the size of a pea, and are deep purple in color. They emit a strong stench of rotten eggs, which wards off animals. Once their juice is extracted, however, the stench disappears, although they may stain you purple if you spill the juice. If extracted into a juice, Maive berries become, in essence, an invisibility potion, granting whoever drinks this juice the power of invisibility.
Genetics and Reproduction
The Maive berry contains 1 small, black seed inside of it. As the berry matures, this seed begins to work its way out of the berry. Once the berry is fully mature, the seed drop out of it, leaving a small hole behind it. Magic enables the seed to then fly away, finding a new spot to grow. However, the Maive berry takes a very long time to mature, about 3 months, and the flower takes longer still to become the berry. Even when the berry is mature, the seed has a good chance of being male, unable to produce more berries on its own. If this happens, then it will plant itself near its mother plant. Due to this, usually female Maive plants are ringed by a dozen or so male Maive plants.
Growth Rate & Stages
The Maive plant grows to 3 inches high in about 3 weeks, and then drastically slows down, growing only a small bit every year. The Maive plant very rarely dies, as it requires very few nutrients to sustain itself. It could even get by with no light, although it would most likely produce very little fruit if it had no light. It is also possible for the Maive plant to grow on the bottom of a lake, and to do well down there as well.
Ecology and Habitats
The Maive plant grows only near strong sources of magic, which are usually found in forests, at the bottom of lakes, and near strong magical creatures dwellings. The Maive plant usually conceals itself underneath another, larger, leafy plant, so as to be less noticeable to intelligent and non-intelligent creatures. However, it cannot conceal its stink, so if an intelligent creature happens by, it will almost certainly detect the Maive plant.
Biological Cycle
The Maive plant is not affected by cold or heat, as it is magically protected from seasonal changes. It therefore does not change very much, apart from losing the cabability to make berries if it is in a spot with no sun, or too few nutrients.
Scientific Name
Maiveus Magicae
Origin/Ancestry
Western
Conservation Status
Since Maive plants only grow near strong magical sources, they are extremely rare, as almost nobody can ascertain where such sources might be found. Due to this, it is impossible to grow them anywhere but where they are naturally found.
