Arcadian Houses

Arcadian houses are rather tall and thin, somewhat like towers. They are built this way because most of the inhabitants of Arcadia are wizards, and these wizards have found that a tall, thin house with many levels can easily house all their ingredients and spellbooks, and organize them efficiently as well.

Purpose / Function

The houses in Arcadia are built to be tall and thin because this way the wizards of Arcadia can easily organize their belongings. Each level holds a different type of belonging, such as an ingredients level, books level, brewing level, scrying level, sleeping and eating level, etc. More often than not there are several levels for different types of ingredients and books, such as a history books level, spellbooks level, ingredient books level, animal books level, scrying spell ingredients level, elemental spell ingredients level, etc. To list all the different types of levels would take far too much time, and this is the reason that Arcadian towers are so tall. Often the rooms on each level are not especially big, but rather there are a lot of rooms for specific belongings. This makes it easy for the wizards of Arcadia to find what they need at a moments notice, as the towers have a set of enclosed steps up one side inside the building, and all the doors are labeled. Even the oldest wizards can mount these steps, as they are enchanted to renew the strength of the people using them. This means that the oldest wizard in Arcadia, while out of breath due to a long walk, will not become tired using the stairs in any of the houses.

Alterations

The houses of Arcadia were once rather like a large mansion, but this made many of the wizards of the time become confused as to where their belongings were. Quite often they would set out to seek the spellbook room and would instead end up at the ingredients room, at the other end of the palace. These mansions were built like mazes, and so the inhabitants of Arcadia became very stressed when searching for something in their own house. Then a brilliant new wizard began to try and find a solution to this never-ending frustration and confusion, and he began experimenting with different types of houses. First he tried a long, narrow house, which had one hallway down its length, but this still did not work, as it was so long even he became tired when walking down it. His next try was a 2-floor house shaped like a sphere, but this did not work, as the rooms still were confusingly laid out. He then built a tall, thin tower, with every door labeled. This worked quite fine, and he showed it to the wizard who ruled the country, and got the rulers permission to begin converting the large, confusing mansions into tall, thin towers. This not only solved the problem of layout, it also enabled more houses to be built as the towers took up less room on the ground. A few decades later, the same wizard, now old and tired, added the enchanted steps so nobody would be tired going up and down the stairs.

Architecture

The wizard towers are made of cobblestone, but occasionally a rich wizard with high-standing will build Lapis Lazuli into his walls, so as to further the success and potency of his spells.
