Session Report 80
General Summary
The Muskrats had returned to the outskirts of Wulkan. Off in the distance they saw columns of smoke rising into the sky. The columns were roughly a half day away. The Muskrats were hesitant to attempt to investigate but their curiosity got the best of them and headed off towards the smoke. Itzal sent Serenity ahead to investigate the camp. Through the eyes of Serenity, Itzal observed what appeared to be a refugee camp of those who had fled Wulkan. The Muskrats made the choice to head to the camp to attempt and gain information on what was happening in the city. Upon reaching the camp, the Muskrats met a silver dragonborn named Camreac Sanaar, who was denied entry to Wulkan when he tried to enter the city to join the Temple of Bahamut. He shared quite a bit of information with the party. He told the party that the Black Blades were going around kidnapping and torturing individuals. The Black Blades supposedly were investigating devil worshippers and were rooting out heretics who threatened the city. Camreac asked for help from the party to aid the refugees. The Muskrats offered what little bit they could. Camreac did mention that the Blades of Purity had come to the camp a few times to offer aid and that there were rumors of people going missing after they visited the camp.
The Muskrats met other individuals in the camp who shared information with them. Sloan met Traver Fiddleteddle, a gnome singer who was performing at the Shouting Potato when the Black Blades raided the tavern. They took everyone captive and killed those who resisted. Ingmora Fuhem told Sloan about her husband who was captured and accused of producing weapons for the heretics. He was one of the first taken and she found him a month later when she found his head on the wall. Finally, Cambio was approached by Verni Thornbrook, who asked for help in finding her sister named Violet. Violet worked at a bookshop in the Azure Square. In exchange for the Muskrats' help, Verni offered to connect the Muskrats with Verni's boss at the Black Pegasus in the Sorrows at midnight.
The Muskrats next travelled to the Sorrows, a slum outside of Wulkan. They found the tavern and settled into an abandoned home to pass the time until midnight. Itzal sent Serenity into the city to investigate the Church of Waukeen that had been converted into a base of operations for the Black Blades. Flying through the city Itzal felt as though he was constantly watched. Sneaking into the church, Itzal saw members of the Black Blades torturing individuals and a loud sound of crunching. Even though Serenity was in her rat form, Itzal felt as though he was still being watched. Looking up he saw a mass of black tendrils and hundreds of eyes affixed to the top of the ceiling. Itzal slowly crept forward and followed the sound of crunching. There, he saw a table of devils devouring various humanoids spread across a table. One devil stood up and charged across the room to capture Serenity and chomp down on her. As soon as she was grabbed, Serenity impaled herself on a barb of the devil.
With that horrifying sight in mind, Itzal and rest of the Muskrats continued their waiting. At midnight they headed to the Black Pegasus and performed a secret knock to gain access to the tavern. There, they were introduced to Davnas Zuvolath, the leader of the Three Sorrows Gang. The Three Sorrows Gang had been involved in slave trading and weapon smuggling with Mayathangi and also had dealings with Nephris when he was present in Vladdingmore. Davnas had a considerable amount of information to share with the Muskrats. First, House Vassa had led a coup to take over the city and had aligned themselves with devils to accomplish their goal. Second, House Vassa did in fact have a portal to lead to Magmarath Caldera. Finally, the Three Sorrows Gang had an old tunnel that led into the sewers of Wulkan and could be used to infiltrate the city. Seeing the opportunity the party decided to use the tunnel to get inside the city.
