Session Report 79

General Summary

With a crisis averted, the Muskrats could finally settle down and do some shopping. Their shopping trip would take them to Fantasma, a magic shop near the Citadel in Dalbyen. The shop was owned by a middle aged minotaur by the name of Mundrin. The Muskrats were immediately introduced to the unique aspect of Fantasma: the wide selection of alcoholic potions the store offered in addition to magical items and non-alcoholic potions. The Muskrats went on a shopping spree. Itzal picked up a magical book to enlarge his big brain and an item to project another ward to bolster his defensive measures. Tazmeth added a powerful new sword that may have been scavenged from his monastery and a ring to greatly enhance his movement capabilities. Dami added a belt that allowed her to roar like a hell hound, but caused her great hunger and even created the potential that she turn to dust when she dies. Dami also added many of the alcoholic potions to her inventory. Sloan having sworn a life of poverty could not afford any of the items and watched judgingly at the Muskrats' gaudy display of wealth. Tazmeth was unable to find one item that he was searching for: a magical tattoo. Mundrin said he ask around to see if he could turn up a tattoo artist capable of providing Tazmeth with one.
After departing Fantasma, Tazmeth was approached by a boy who had a message from Krillin. The boy informed Tazmeth that Zeya had left Krilling and Master Linil to join Tritemeus, in the hopes of taking down the Achivelli. She had left in the middle of the night and was heading for Wulkan. The boy told Tazmeth he could find Krillin in the Chubby Pig Tavern. Upon reaching the tavern, the Muskrats found Krillin eating pork pies and having proclaimed a new life of being a chef at a tavern. Tazmeth urged Krillin to aid in the search for Zeya, but Krillin was adamant that he had nothing to offer and that the monastery was now gone. He even accused Tazmeth of being a hypocrite, since Tazmeth was the first to leave the monastery. Krilling left Tazmeth with two warnings from Master Linil. First, that Zeya was a member of House Vassa and she could not be allowed to make contact with them. Second, that tazmeth mustn't allow revenge to shroud his judgment. A similar warning to the one he provided at the banquet in Halvoy. The warnings given, Krillin wished Tazmeth the best of luck and the two parted yet again.
In that time, Itzal set about researching the Achivelli using the Archvisit's Key. Itzal learned that the Achivelli were founded by an elven woman named Illaloth. Interestingly, her brother was the founding emperor of the Eltenweiss Empire. Illaloth was known for the golden dragon that accompanies her and for her unbelievable combat prowess in both magic and martial challenges. The Achivelli were formed to free humanoids from the oppression of the dragons and giants. The Achivelli successfully pushed giants into hiding on the Prime Material Plane or to other planes of existence. As for the dragons they met a similar fate except for those who are part of the Achivelli. The Achivelli were divided into three separate divisions: Metallics, Chromatics, and Gems. The divisions were derived from the kinds of dragons that comprise the Achivelli. Each division was led by a single humanoid and dragon. However, very little was known about these individuals. Itzal's research also led him to an account of the defeat of three members of the Achivelli against Thaydon. The last bit that Itzal dug up was a book written by Tritemeus on combatting the Achivelli. One of the suggestions in the book was a work by Tritemeus himself titled Project: It That Zeroes All Liability. The work described an artificial lifeform specifically designed to use the arcane arts to combat the Achivelli and who would protect Tritemeus's children.
With the Muskrats research finished, Tazmeth continued his search for a tattoo artist in Dalbyen. He found a goliath with numerous tattoos named Apathok. Apathok told Tazmeth that he was given his tattoos by an archdevil named Nihanas, Lord of the Three Needles in a place called the Magmarath Caldera. The Magmarath Caldera was located in the Nine Hells and specifically on the fourth layer, Phlegethos. It was a sprawling, fiery city filled with devils, demons, and other fiends. The Tribunal of Wrath oversaw the administration of the city and the Magma Militia carried out their orders. The location that Apathok found most interesting in the city was the Iron Maw Arena, a colosseum where challengers from all across the planes could test their might. Apathok warned that Magmarath Caldera was a highly dangerous place that few of his companions had ever survived. As for Nihanas, Apathok provided some advice to Tazmeth for getting a tattoo. Mention his name and that Nihanas may try to test Tazmeth before even offering his services. Tazmeth and the Muskrats returned to Mundrin to see if he had turned up any information on a tattoo artist. Mundrin learned through his network that within the estate of House Vassa they have a portal directly linked to Magmarath Caldera. The portal provided an excellent opportunity for the Muskrats to reach the city.
The final stop of the Muskrats' downtime before heading to Wulkan was Daimler Bauman in Ginnel's Beach. Daimler had sent a message previously that the Muskrats should contact him for information. Daimler had uncovered quite a bit of information regarding Tritemeus, Sauvek, and House Vassa. First, Tritemeus had set up shop in the Kingdom of Tortoi and was making his preparations for the battle against the Achivelli. Additionally, Daimler had stolen materials from one of Tritemeus's research stations. One book was titled Project I.T.Z.A.L. II. The book revealed that Tritemeus had created Itzal as a tool to fight the Achivelli and protect Cambio, but that Tritemeus found him to be a failure due to Itzal's opposition to Tritemeus's mission. As for Sauvek, Daimler told the Muskrats that Sauvek intended to reclaim the empire the giants once had and directly oppose the Achivelli. Finally, Daimler had much to share about Wulkan. House Rhoma under the direction of the Night Ruler Julum Rhoma had locked the city down. This was presumably under the orders of House Vassa. The Arcane Arbiters had been conscripted and had created a network of magical defenses such as preventing teleportation. The Black Blades were roaming the city and the countryside hunting down members of House Blackpaw and Goldbloom plus anyone they suspected to be heretics. House Wuldhall had been expelled from the city and they fled to Port Vertel. Most people who were taken were not seen again, but along the walls of Wulkan heads sitting atop spikes had grown to be a frequent occurrence. It appeared as well that the Blades of Purity were preparing for an assault on the city and that Anathema was looking to get revenge on whoever had harmed her originally in the Nine Hells. Coincidentally, the mighty fiend that stripped her of her celestial status was in Magmarath Caldera. Daimler also shared that Arbeyach and Mayathangi were in Magmarath Caldera at that current time. Wulkan appeared to be the best leads for the Muskrats so with a quick teleport they ended up on the outskirts of the city ready to uncover the fiendish mysteries plaguing the city.
