Session Report 5
After slaughtering of the last Drow, the Muskrats went to work looting their subterranean outpost. As they searched, it the ground under them began to shake. Their search was cut short when they caught a glimpse of the Drow mage and four of his allies emerge from deeper in the cavern. Before they could engage them, an enormous purple worm burst out from the ground and consumed the four Drow henchmen before disappearing back into the earth. The Drow mage was lost in the explosion of rock. The cavern began to collapse as the Muskrats ran for the river, all escaped unscathed but Redtail, who tripped over his tail and took a falling rock to the face.
Soon after the party escaped, the guards sent by Obsidian arrived at the cavern. The party informed them that they had already eliminated the drow threat. Happy to not have to risk their skin, the guards returned to Gormond. They never learned how close to death they had come. The party followed quickly after them.
The roads were empty and the party's journey back to Gormond was wholly uneventful. However, upon their arrival, they noticed the guard at the gate had been tripled. After speaking with those guards, they learned that in their absence, Gormond had been ransacked by a tribe of goblins. Several guards had been killed and several houses had been plundered. The party paid the increased toll of 3 copper (after grumbling about the penny pinching guards) and reentered the town.
The Muskrats found Daimler, who was still cooped up in the Jaded Elixir. He rewarded them handsomely with 5 gold pieces per party-member for eliminating the Drow threat. He was crestfallen to not receive a single elf-ear, which were incredibly necessary for his magical experiments. He advised the party to contact Obsidian and see what they could do to help resolve the goblin threat. Off they went to the Obsidian's keep, noting how much more militarized the town had grown since their last visit.
Obsidian thanked the party for ridding the hills of the Drow. He acknowledged that while he and Daimler were constantly vying to establish themselves as the true protector of Gormond, that Daimler had the city's best interests at heart and was genuinely trying to protect the civilians from the dangers in the surrounding hills. Obsidian also noted that there were tensions between the dispossessed Pardwell family and the Morrand Alliance and that the Pardwells had substantial leverage over Morrand Alliance rule in Gormond as the city and the lands surrounding it had to be rented from the Pardwell family at a high rate. Obsidian noted that the goblin raid was likely part of a larger plot as the goblins seemed too objective focused for it to be simple bloodlust. Obsidian informed them that according to his scouts, there were two camps of goblins - (1) a small mine with maybe 10 to 15 goblins and (2) a cave complex with unnumbered goblins and countless worgs and other beasts. He implored the party to do what his scouts couldn't and kill off the goblins. Obsidian then directed the party to Ore Galore and its Goliath patrons as it had been the specific target of the goblin raiders.
As soon as the party arrived at Ore Galore, the Gakin was awe-struck by Sam Urai, inspecting the strange markings on the back of his neck and recollecting a prophecy involving their destiny to forge a powerful sword for him to wield. To do that, they would have need the party to recover the windstones that the goblins had stolen from their shop. Similarly, Zarhak was drawn to Sauvek, telling Sauvek that he could give him the traditional Goliath tattoo's Sauvek conspicuously lacked. To do so, he would need a significant amount of bone marrow to do the inscribing.
The party headed first to the mine occupied by the smaller group of goblins. The party was spotted quickly but they were able to make quick work of the goblins. They found the windstones and returned them to Gakin, who began smelting the sword for Sam Urai. Redtail and Itzal returned to Daimler - Redtail brought him a surprisingly uneaten goblin corpse for Daimler's research (for which he was rewarded 2 gp and 5 doses of militaur venom) and Itzal purchased the components necessary to summon himself an owl companion. The party then returned to the goblin's mine to rest for the night with designs to make it their headquarters.
After an undisturbed night's rest, the party traveled an hour or two to the entrance to the goblin's cavern. Once again, the party was spotted quickly and the goblin sentries retreated to alert their allies. The party blasted through a makeshift wall (not before Redtail impaled himself on it) and were immediately surrounded on both sides by goblins and worgs. Despite being woefully outnumbered, Sauvek could not be brought down as he crushed goblin and worg alike with his warhammer. Meanwhile, Sam Urai cut through several goblin warriors while Itzal and Cambio reduced a bugbear to ash with their combined magicks. Redtail's aim was true when it needed to be and he put a poisoned bolt through the eye of the last goblin standing.
With their foes slain, the caverns went silent and the party steadied themselves for what was yet to come.
