Vayra (VAY-ruh)

People of the Vayran Islands, which have long been under the control of the Hasla. The Vayran Islands are to the south-west of Grenton.   The Vayra have been living on their island for ages. Legend tells of a beach of golden sand, that the Hasla have been tirelessly seeking. The Vayra, known as glassfolk, reproduce via glassblowing. However, the Hasla fear that they will turn gold into worthless glass. As a result, they have been suppressing the Vayran lineage, the art of glassblowing, the associated religious practices, and even the island's economy.

Vayra Glassblowing

Vayra Glassblowing has become an esteemed craft among the islanders. The Vayra artisans meticulously fashion small glass figures, some of which are beautifully decorative, while others are imbued with simple charms that bring them to life as enchanting automata. The most extraordinary glass creations possess a profound magic, possessing a soul of their own.

Hasla

The Hasla, hailing from the lands of Hasla'a, are a people with a significant demand for gold in their own realm and neighboring territories. The rulers demand gold at any cost, including the livelihoods of the Vayra people.

Common Taboos

playing with the sand –– seen as a holy act and just playing with it is heretical

Common Myths and Legends

According to Vayra legend, a young girl named Vayramá was stranded on the island after a shipwreck. One day, she saw lightening strike the sand, turning it to glass. Feeling lonely, she sculpted the sand on the beach into human forms alongside the towering trees. In the next storm, a lightning bolt struck the sand, transforming her sculptures into stunning glass statues. However, they remained motionless until Vayramá, overwhelmed by her solitude, wept tears of sorrow upon them, miraculously bringing them to life.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The ideals are similar to how we value glass– if there are no bubbles, there are no scratches, the color is constant, interesting techniques, etc.    It is easy for the Vayra to change themselves, but is high-risk.

Gender Ideals

Gender is very superficial for the glassfolk. Their creators chose what they would look like, and the individual people can change their appearance by working with glassblowers.

Courtship Ideals

Glassfolk produce asexually. Their courtship is focused around companionship.
