Geography
Malakaya is a port city located on the Western coast of Khania, situated at the mouth of the Louros River. The city is surrounded by the vast Moshea Swamps , which serve as a natural barrier to the East, South, and North. To the West, the city touches the Hungering Bay, a bustling body of water that is critical to the city's maritime trade. The geography of Malakaya has influenced the city's layout, with the various wards of the city radiating outwards from the bay.Weather
Malakaya has a subtropical climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The city is situated on the western coast of Khania, and is therefore subject to the cooling influence of sea breezes. The rainy season typically lasts from Goldharvest through Seedsprout, with precipitation mainly occurring in the form of heavy showers and thunderstorms. The summer months are generally hot and dry, with temperatures often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The surrounding Moshea swamps can contribute to the city's humidity and occasional fogs. Despite the occasional discomfort, Malakaya's weather is overall pleasant and contributes to the city's reputation as a popular tourist destination.Society
Malakaya's culture is marked by sharp class divides. The city's noble class enjoys lavish lifestyles, living in grand estates and engaging in opulent festivities, while the lower classes struggle to make ends meet. This divide is particularly visible in the Bilge, the slums of the city, where crime is rampant and poverty is widespread. Despite the struggles of the lower classes, Malakaya is still a major destination for tourists due to its beautiful architecture, bustling port, and lively nightlife. Many visitors come to experience the city's unique blend of luxury and squalor, as well as to explore the nearby Moshea swamps.Customs
Malakaya has a rich culture, and its people celebrate a variety of holidays throughout the year. One of the most popular is the Feast of the Sea, a week-long festival in which the city's fishermen and sailors honor the ocean and give thanks for their bounty. During the festival, the streets are filled with music, dancing, and colorful parades, and the markets overflow with fresh seafood. Another important holiday is the Day of the Wind, a day-long celebration of the city's famous sea breezes, which are said to bring good luck and prosperity. In addition to its festive traditions, Malakaya is also home to a thriving arts scene. The city is known for its street performers, including acrobats, jugglers, and fire-eaters, who can be seen entertaining crowds in the plazas and squares throughout the city. Malakaya is also famous for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars, nightclubs, and casinos catering to locals and tourists alike. The city's vibrant cultural scene and unique customs make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Khania.Religion
Malakaya is a city where religion plays an important role in daily life. There are several grand cathedrals throughout the city dedicated to different gods and goddesses, including Herimetha, goddess of mercy, and Avelyn, god of trade. These cathedrals are often visited by the nobles, who enjoy the art and music of the religious ceremonies. However, religion is not only important to the upper class. The people of the Bilge, the city's slums, often find comfort in the charitable efforts of the Lys Hospitalier, a group of clerics devoted to Herimetha. They provide medical care, food, and shelter to the sick and needy in the city. Despite the religious fervor, there is a stark divide between the wealthy and the poor in Malakaya. The nobles, who control much of the city's wealth and power, often indulge in excess and vice, despite the teachings of their respective faiths. This has led to a growing resentment among the lower classes, who often turn to criminal activity in order to survive. As a result, the city is also home to several cults and secret societies, who offer their own brand of spiritualism and protection to those who join them.Criminality
Malakaya's culture is also marked by the presence of criminal elements. Organized crime syndicates are a significant force in the city, with many groups vying for control of various criminal enterprises. Smuggling, racketeering, and extortion are all common in Malakaya, and the city's authorities are often unable or unwilling to stop them. Despite this, Malakaya's criminal underworld is also a major source of employment for many of the city's residents, particularly those in the Bilge. Gangs provide people to watch your back, financial security, and a feeling of control to those who join, and the Bilge has been carved up considerably into various gang territories. The Scarlet Razors are the most powerful gang in the Bilge, though syndicates like The Sisters can rival them in influence, as they have their fingers in nearly every illegal pie in the city. Information brokers also ply an efficient trade in Malakaya, selling rumors and secrets to anyone who asks.Government
Malakaya is ruled by the Council of Princes, which is composed of the leaders of the five most powerful merchant houses in the city; House Shipbreaker, House Falidore, House Stormblade, House Bellheart, and House Vesper. The Council governs the city-state by making decisions on various issues such as trade agreements, taxes, and security. In addition to the Council, there is also a City Watch that is responsible for maintaining law and order within the city. The Council of Princes maintains a delicate balance of power within the city, as each merchant house strives to increase its wealth and influence. The Council's decisions have a direct impact on the economy and culture of Malakaya, making it a highly sought-after position for ambitious merchants. However, the Council's power is not absolute, as the city's lesser nobles wield significant influence as well. Despite the city's reputation for corruption and vice, the Council has managed to maintain a level of stability, and the city continues to thrive as a center of trade and commerce in Khania.Trade
Malakaya serves as the trade hub for the entire Holy See, with its bustling port and merchant fleets bringing in goods from all over Khania and beyond. The city is strategically located at the mouth of the Louros River, which allows it to easily access the interior of the continent and the other major cities of Khania. Malakaya's merchants are renowned for their business acumen, and the city's commerce ward is a testament to their success. Malakaya's economy is heavily reliant on trade, and the city's merchants have established trade routes that span the entire world of Eos. The city's ships carry goods such as spices, silk, and exotic animals to the far reaches of the world, and the city is also known for its fine craftsmen and artisans. The council of princes closely oversees all trade and commerce in the city, and is responsible for regulating tariffs and ensuring the smooth flow of goods in and out of the city.Defenses
Malakaya's strategic location on the coast of Khania, at the mouth of the Louros River, has made it a target for invading forces throughout history. In order to protect the city from attack, Malakaya has developed a strong tradition of defenses. The city is surrounded by high walls, and a series of watchtowers and fortifications are positioned along the coast to keep an eye out for any approaching threats. Additionally, the city has a standing army of trained soldiers to defend against any potential threats. One notable aspect of Malakaya's defenses is its reliance on mercenary companies. These companies, composed of experienced soldiers for hire, are a common sight in the city's streets and markets. They are often employed by wealthy merchants and nobles to serve as bodyguards or to defend their property. However, in times of war, the mercenary companies can be contracted by the Council of Princes to serve as Malakaya's army. This has led to a unique relationship between the mercenary companies and the city, with many companies considering Malakaya their home base. Despite its formidable defenses, Malakaya has not been without its fair share of conflicts. Over the years, the city has faced attacks from pirates and foreign armies. However, thanks to its strong walls, well-trained soldiers, and skilled mercenary companies, Malakaya has always managed to repel these attacks and emerge victorious.History
Founding
The founding of Malakaya dates back to the early days of the Holy See of Khania. The area was first settled by a group of dwarven exiles who were fleeing persecution from their kin in the dwarven homeland. These exiles, known as the Ironborn, established a stronghold in the Moshea swamps, which would eventually become the city of Malakaya. As the Ironborn Dwarves settled in the western coast of Khania, they quickly realized that their skills in metalworking and mining could be used to great advantage in trade. They made contact with the Korinthian traders, a seafaring group of nomads, and together they established a bustling trading post in the heart of the Moshea Swamp. The stronghold was a beacon of commerce and prosperity, attracting traders and merchants from all over the region. Over time, the Ironborn and the Korinthians began to see themselves as equal partners, and they began to search for a name that would reflect their mutual respect and cooperation. Legend has it that during a particularly rainy season, a great flood swept through the Moshea Swamp, threatening to destroy the Ironborn-Korinthian stronghold. The Ironborn, using their incredible strength and skill, managed to hold back the floodwaters long enough for the Korinthians to construct a massive dam. Together, they managed to save the stronghold from destruction. In honor of this feat of cooperation, they named their stronghold "Malakaya," which means "united strength" in the Dwarven tongue. The name became a symbol of the enduring friendship between the Ironborn Dwarves and the humans of Korinthia. The early days of Malakaya were marked by conflicts with the Lizardfolk that had previously inhabited the region. The Ironborn were able to fend off most of these attacks due to their superior technology and combat expertise. Over time, the Ironclad and the human settlers were able to establish a strong presence in the region, which eventually grew into the bustling port city it is today.Conflicts
Malakaya has a long and storied history of conflict, beginning with the battles between the dwarven exiles and the Lizardfolk that once inhabited the region. Over the years, the city has faced numerous other threats, including a devastating pirate attack in 1571. The attack, led by the notorious pirate captain Kaelen Darkwater, left much of the city in ruins and forced the council to rebuild many of its defenses. In 1984, Malakaya was sacked by a powerful army of Yuan-Ti serpentfolk, who had infiltrated the city and seized control of its government. The serpentfolk's reign of terror lasted for nearly a decade, during which time they enslaved much of the population. It wasn't until a group of brave adventurers, led by the legendary hero Morthos Blackblade, launched a daring assault on the serpentfolk's stronghold that the city was finally liberated. Despite these conflicts, Malakaya has managed to endure and thrive, thanks in no small part to its mercenary companies and skilled defenders. Today, the city is considered one of the most secure in the region, and its armies are renowned for their discipline and effectiveness in battle.Locations

The Bilge, situated in the lowest part of Malakaya, is a place where the poorest residents of the city dwell. The streets are narrow and winding, lined with crumbling buildings and overflowing sewers. The area is plagued by disease and crime, with gangs fighting over territory and scraps. Food is scarce, and the people who live here are malnourished and sickly. The air is thick with the stench of rot and decay, and the only light comes from flickering torches and the occasional lantern hung outside a rundown tavern. The people of the Bilge are forgotten by the rest of Malakaya, left to fend for themselves in a world that cares little for their plight.Landmarks
