The Gatehouse (Toft)

Purpose / Function

  • Originally, the Gatehouse of Toft was the entryway to the city. Massive gates and numerous traps for would-be invaders were designed into the structure by Enga’s foremost defensive architects.
  • Shortly after it was completed, the head of the Sectum Album and the head of the Bellum Divinos met to discuss who would claim the structure. The War Wizards agreed that the Protectors would man the Gatehouse and the walls, the War Wizards filling the role of the army in the field. The Scutum took the Gatehouse, the Bellum the Barracks.

Alterations

  • Added spell wards to the walls and the gatehouse itself
  • Began patrols along the walls (as they were built). The walls aren’t very long, only enough to cover the pass (there is no other approach to the city)

Architecture

  • Large stone towers on either side of the main road into Toft with connecting walls that run the width of the Black pass. The two towers of the gatehouse are connected by stone work bridges. The gates portcullis is made of magically enhanced iron and capable of withstanding direct magical assault (the Bellum Divinos tried for three days and could not break it). While the gate doors themselves are wood, they are reinforced internally with magically enchanted iron. Above the gate itself, there is room on the stonework for 10 mages to cast spells, not counting space on the walls.
