Spells House Rules

Channeling Magic is like opening a faucet. Well, a faucet where only a certain amount of liquid will come out of. So, I suppose, in that way, it’s more like emptying a water bladder. Supplies are limited and when it's empty, nothing more will come out.

Spell Points:

  • As a magic user, you will have a limited number of spell points based on your Character level and any racial bonuses. Once these points are used, you will be unable to cast spells, other than Cantrips, until you have regained those points via rest or other means.

  • Points are regained at a rate based on how long a magic user rests and what level they are. This is representative of the fact that higher level magic users will have learned to recoup magic energy at a much faster rate than beginners.

Spell Cost:

 
  • Each spell level has a cost, an amount of points that you must spend to cast spells of that level. When you cast a spell at that level, subtract that cost from your total points.

Casting Above and Beyond Your Level:

  • Spell users are still constrained by the number of “slots” available, but this acts more as definition of effort. If you are allowed 4 1st level slots, but by points you can still cast first level spells, then you can do so. But your 5th 1st level spell could harm you as you are pushing yourself beyond your normal limits. This is to signify that while you can channel a certain amount of magical energy or force (represented by “level”), doing it repeatedly can cause problems or wear you out.
  • Additionally, based on how far above your casting level you are attempting to cast, it can put strain on a mage as well. On the lower chart for known spells, there will be a (G) for Green, (Y) for Yellow, (O) for Orange or (B) for Black.
  • For that reason:
Equal to or less than available slots Or (G): No Check Needed
More than Available Slots or (Y): Success w/ CON Check
More than 2 times the available slots or (O): Success w/ CON Check at Disadvantage
More than 3 times the available slots or (B): Success w/ CON and Primary Stat Check, both at disadvantage
  • Just because this check is failed, does not mean that the spell fail, just that there are consequences.
 
Sorcerers:
  • Creating Slots: Using sorcery points to create a slot effectively extends the amount of spells you can cast before it has detrimental effects, but does not gain you spell points.
  • Converting Slots: Spell slots can be converted to give you the same number of points as the cost of a spell at that level. For instance, converting a 2nd level spell slot would give you an additional 50 spell points.


Knowledge:

 
  • On Enga, a spell caster’s knowledge is not limited to just a few spells “prepared” each day (by available slots). During an apprenticeship, a spell caster is going to be exposed to, read about or otherwise experience a large number of spells and learn even more of them. For that reason, you will know and have “prepared” double the number of afforded spells for each level you can afford (by points). This amount is to signify time spent in apprenticeship, where the spell caster would write down every spell that their teacher provided. For that reason:
    At level one, a spell caster will choose the following:
  • 8 First Level Spells
  • 4 Second Level Spells
  • 2 Third Level Spells
  • 2 Fourth Level Spells
  • No more than 12 spells can be known at any spell level. See below for the known number of spells know per level:

  • All spell casters in Enga, when they become apprenticed, are given a special spell book or tome. This book must be in the spell casters inventory at all times. The Arcana of Toft provides these books to all new Gandbera, as well as to cities where new mages or spell casters are likely to appear (for purchase) and they are enchanted to be nearly indestructible (the Council of Toft could not stand the idea of a loss of knowledge like the loss of a spell book). Breaking that restriction can only be done by the Librarian Of the Blue Tower, or the spell caster themselves. Spell casters can “will” the book to someone else, but that is a permanent effect. This book is a unique identifier and proof of magic ability that is used in some places for various different purposes. If a spell caster looses this book, they may use only Cantrips from that point forward until it is recovered or replaced.
  • After level one, all new spells earned must be learned somewhere. So increasing this knowledge base will take research and time. This can be in the form of teaching from one of the Gandbera from Toft who is higher level, research at the local arcanist outpost (if there is one), traveling to Toft for lessons, etc. Spells found “along the way” can also be learned, but this takes 3 full days of research and experimentation before it can be added to the spell casters book.
Last Stand:
If you have no points, and still desire to cast a spell, you can do this one time per encounter but doing so has a very high cost:
  • Your Constitution will permanently lower by one (1) point.
  • You will take Failure Effects from the “Burnout”, “Deadly Consequences” and "Unintended Effects” tables as well as any effects based on the spell level as though it was a failure.
  • You will be so drained by the effort (no matter the level of the spell) that you will be unable to take any action for 10 rounds to include moving. You will still be allowed to take any bonus actions other than spells (no Cantrips).
  • All hits against you will automatically succeed until the end of the 10 round limit.
  • You will regain no spell points until you take a long rest.
