Holl

Founded in 338 AB by refugees from Fire Giant attacks in the south of Western Enga, Holl has grown to become the center of one of the Rikr Jarldom of Alfsnes most powerful Jarldoms. Holl’s location at the end of Holl Fjord, nestled in the Valley of Hilf between the Tyr Domari and Freya’s Fegrd mountain ranges, places it in a prime position for launching raids to the north and south as well as across the Sanctuary Sea to the Spine Coast.

Defences

  • All working age citizens are required to provide defenses of the village if there is an attack. For this reason, every child begins training in shield, axe, sax and archery at age 10, and continue through adulthood. This means that upwards of 700 men and women can respond to an attack
  • Additionally, the large Skratte District means that there are an additional 200 fighters at any one time (the Skratte in Holl are fiercely defensive of the village. If the Skratte fight, they bring their Skratte Vargr (Wolves) and the pack at Holl is over 50 strong, though friendly with all the citizens unless they are threatened.

Industry & Trade

  • The Jarldom of Holl has 30 Uldan Longships available for long range raiding. After summoning raiders from throughout the Jarldom, these raid can return large amounts of precious metals, farm and artisan goods.
  • Additionally, Holl is the only place that is producing Uldan Longships, which they sell to other Hersir Jarls within the Rikr Jarldom of Alfsnes.

Architecture

  • Like most buildings in raiding villages, the buildings in Holl are built out of wood. Houses have a bowed center, mimicking the boats they use for raiding. The walls are lined with clay or vertical wooden planks. Roofs are sloped and made of wood or thatched. Though windowless, light is allowed in the buildings via roof ventilation for fireplaces or fire pits in the house. If the occupants can afford it, decorative carving is applied wherever it can be.

Geography

  • The village is located on the coast of Holl Fjord between two mountain ranges (Tyr Domari and Freya’s Fegrd) in a naturally formed valley (The Valley of Hilf) and right on the shore of the Sanctuary Sea. The Valley of Hilf is densely forested with Vaskr Trees commonly found throughout Enga.

Natural Resources

  • Holls location gives it access to many natural resources. Wood is available from The Valley of Hilf, Ore is mined from the Tyr Domari nearby by Ulda and Skratte miners and farm goods (grains and root vegetables mostly), Livestock from local farms (pigs, goats, poultry), and fish from Holl Fjord and The Sanctuary Sea are also available.
