Magical Aphasia

Magical Aphasia, also commonly called M A or Magical Neuropathy in medical parlance, is a malady that occurs in individuals exposed to high quantities of harmless or beneficial magical energy. The term is thought to originate from the idea that the soul forgets how to speak to the body, when in reality it is an inflammation of nerves induced by intrusive overstimulation.

Transmission & Vectors

There are a wide array of possible vectors for magical aphasia, both induced and ambient, but by and large the most common vector is being healed by magic. Small wound closures, bone defracturing, and any relatively small healing magics will usually induce short term magic aphasia that can last anywhere from 24 hours to a week. Restoration of functionality, regeneration, or full on resurrection however can force a chronic, sometimes even permanent, variation of the malady.

Symptoms

Symptoms of magical aphasia are as thus: low and ambient pain across the entire body, twitching, difficulty moving digits, headaches, inflammation of affected areas, numbness or extreme sensitivity, loss of motor control, loss of balance, occasional but short-lived bouts of paralysis, and muscle weakness. Symptom intensity or even existence varies depending on the severity of the case.

Treatment

There are no known cures for magical aphasia, only symptom treatments. In most instances of treatment, some manner of laudanum is applied in order to reduce pain. Relaxant salves can also be applied to the skin to give relief in weaker cases.

Prognosis

In nearly every single case, M.A. is a malady that ramps up quickly at it's incipience and dies down slowly over time. The severity of the first few hours of the disease will judge future treatments, and overkill is almost required to treat the first agonizing hours.

Prevention

It is quite easy to avoid magical aphasia- Avoid magic. When traveling through unknown or dangerous areas, lining your wagons or clothes in lead foil is a great help.

Cultural Reception

M.A. is a relatively unknown malady, but one that is generally seen as a devil's bargain, or the type of situation where a bad medicine is better than no medicine.
