Yoreg the Butcher of Brannfelt
Yoreg, the Butcher of Brannfelt
In the 3th war of Belem, Yoreg distinguished himself as a lieutenant of the 5th Vanguard brigade of the Belemese army. Following the joined invasion of Nurmark and Aelland, the 5th was part of the Belemese army deployment to counter the Nurmarker advance North of Denham. The 5th was stationed 10 miles North of Denham near the farming community of Brannfelt, located 1 mile of the coast. During the battle of Brannfelt, the Nurmarkers launched a pincer attack from land and sea to secure the main coastal road and supply line. The 5th, holding the high ground, engaged the main land force, being outnumbered 2 to 1 and unbeknownst a coastal raid was incoming. A brutal land battle followed in which the 5th held their own. Both sides sustained heavy casualties and even though the Nurmarkers outnumbered the 5th, they were unable to claim victory. When the Nurmarker ships came into view, Yoreg saw the battle was lost and planned retreat into Brannfelt. Before retreating the main army, he ordered 10 of his most ruthless soldiers to retreat earlier to butcher the population of Brannfelt, making a brutal display of the bodies, and burning the main farm. When the coastal support troops landed, Yoreg ordered the retreat of the main army into Brannfelt. Part of the replenished Nurmarker army followed the 5th into Brannfelt to kill the routing troops. At the sight of the atrocities in Brannfelt, the Nurmarkers were shaken by the display of cruelty of the 5th against their own people. During this shock, Yoreg ordered a sudden charge against the Nurmarkers. The surprise turn of events demoralized the chasing troops and routed them back to the main army. During this time, the nearby stationed 11th and 16th Belemese infantry regiments noticed the burning of Brannfelt and launched a surprise attack on Brannfelt, to flank the supposed pillaging Nurmarkers. When they arrived they saw the 5th defending Brannfelt whilst the main Nurmarker army was just engaging. During the battle that followed, the 5th, 11th, and 16th managed to defeat the Nurmarker army, stopping their immediate advance down the coast at the cost of the town of Brannfelt. This battle earned Yoreg the notorious title: the Butcher of Brannfelt.
