This is difficult terrain to cross and normal people avoid it because there are many drowners there. The only reason why someone would go to the swamps is for collecting the rare herbs. The swamp is mostly unexplored because of the difficult terrain and monsters. If you have heavy armor or a horse you will drown. And if you have light armor the monsters will get you.
