Elemental Bridge World

A world where elemental spirits roam freely, and can be manipulated by people. There is somewhat of an industrial revolution happening, though it feels heavier than our world. The government of alternate US are at war with a lot of other countries, or at least in conflict with them. In alternate New York, a bridge is being built. It is the hope that this will reach another world, dimensionally. The bridge is being constructed of elemental forms to channel energy into breaking through a dimensional wall. There are attacks on the bridge by denizens of this other world, trying to dissuade the construction. However, this only proves to those in charge that they are succeeding and they press forward. The most advanced technology in transportation is trolleys and steamships. Most folk walk or ride bicycles, and horse drawn wagons are still common, though less so in the city. Most of the city is poor and so housing mirrors that condition. Tight quarters and thin walls are the norm for most families and worse conditions exist.
