Ceverin

Ceverin is a hardy grain capable of growing in harsh enviroments, such as that of northern Syndal, which it is native to. It is commonly used by Orcs as a staple food, as it is one of the few edible plants that grows there.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ceverin grows in short stalks (around nine centimetres) but has roots that extend up to two metres into the ground, both to receive as much nutrients as possible, and to properly anchor itself in the loose soils of the area it grows in.

Genetics and Reproduction

Ceverin reproduces asexually, and drops its seeds in close proximity to the parent. In the loose, powdery earth of southern Syndal, the seeds, being almost perfectly spherical, move quickly in the wind and root themselves to the ground when the wind dies down.

Growth Rate & Stages

Ceverin is quite slow-growing, soaking up nutrients over time.

Ecology and Habitats

Ceverin excels in the rocky soils of southern Syndal. Ironically, it does not tend to survive in fertile lands, as it has no processes to control how quickly it takes in nutrients, and would quickly die from an overdose.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The grains of Ceverin are able to be made into a bread-like food, a common food in Syndal. As such they are grown by farmers on a massive scale (as they have very short growth rates, it takes many of them to sustain even one person. It is possible to plant them so that they can be harvested all year round, as their growth does not depend on seasons).
Conservation Status
There have been periods of time when Ceverin has come close to extinction, such as very windy periods when the seeds are unable to settle. In these periods, the inhabitants, be they the Orcs of today or the Elves of yesterday, take care not to allow this plant to die. They often create shelter for it in these times of need, such as inside tents.
