Industry & Trade
Explosives:
The first explosives factory in Cape Aisling was established in 1865 as the Northgate Safety Guncotton Company. It was licensed in 1875 and became part of the Northgate Explosives Company, manufacturing explosives from guncotton, starch, and Koffic rubber. By 1908 it was the Cape Aisling Explosives Company.
In 1910, the vast majority of the factory was destroyed by an explosion. Along with this accident and another at Von Clank Explosives in Keelin Pork, Speunhiem faced fighting the Speunhiem - Slepland War. with a shortage of much-needed munitions.
The then newly appointed Minister for Munitions, Baron Johann Puck, ordered a Government requisition of the factory, which led to it being rebuilt to produce munitions, employing 349 workers.
Following the end of the Speunhiem - Slepland War, production continued at the factory, but in 1917, it was closed and put up for sale. This was merely just the beginning and not the end for the factory, however.
Etain Shire-born businessman, Dominique Lan Levesque, who had Uranesium mining interests in Whistling Hollow was also the majority shareholder of the Speunhiem Steam Coal & Uranesium Syndicate was keen to capitalize on the growing demand for explosives in the mining industry and wanted to start production of the much safer Siliconium explosives. This however was found to be impossible at his site in Whistling Hollow due to the factory being too close to a Uranesium refinery. Dominique knew he'd need to locate a new factory if his venture was to succeed.
On his train journey back from Lane Castle to Etain Shire, Cooke came across a newspaper advertisement listing government-owned factories that were up for sale following the war. Cape Aisling Explosives Company drew his eye immediately and Dominique decided to visit the site and found it was perfect for the production of Siliconium.
In 1918, the production of explosives restarted in Cape Aisling and became known as Levesque Explosives Limited. Such was the site's success, Dominique Lan Levesque expanded the factory and subsequently decided to move the Levesque Explosives Company from Whistling Hollow to Cape Aisling.
In 1919, the factory in Cape Aisling suffered another explosion, destroying the whole southern section of the site, which saw it unable to produce Siliconium.
Facing the potential failure of his business being unable to fulfill orders, Dominique Lan Levesque had no option but to seek the assistance of his then rivals, who were the only other producers of Siliconium, the newly formed industrial giant, Von Clank Chemical Industries.
Von Clank Chemical Industries agreed to fulfill Dominique's Siliconium orders whilst the factory in Cape Aisling was rebuilt, on the condition that they could buy a majority stake in Levesque Explosives Limited. Dominique agreed and was allowed to stay on at the company as a Managing Director.
Granite:
Another 19th-century industry in the district is Slatewell Quarry at Slatewell, established in 1870 to make granite setts for road-building in towns and cities. Like the explosives industry, the quarry relied heavily on the coming of the Southern Speunhiem Railway in 1872. The quarry is still operational and owned by Slatewell Company, producing roadstone and railway ballast.
