Draconian

The False Dragons

One of the toughest hides in all of Eiria, I think dragons even have problems trying to chew them. But I do hear they taste quite nice roasted and with herbs.
— Ezanaian Beast Boy

Preferring to keep to themselves within their mountain keeps, Draconians tend to be a rarer sight out in the wilds of Eiria. They make good hired muscle as well as competent spell casters. Having overly thick hide that most scholars account as wearing light armor and a face like the mythical dragons of Eiria. From plumage to spikes, to horns or beaks, a single Draconian can look vastly different than the next. Painting the imagery of humanoid dragons as scary and fire-breathing even if they don't.

Beauty Ideals

Women
Women are wanted to be large and robust able to lay clutches and defend those clutches. Bright colors and wings are more seen as more desirable for women than men.
Men
Men are wanted to be smaller and more agile, often their ability to preform acrobatic feats to be a way to make themselves more appealing towards others. Feathers or dreadlock like tendrils are preferred in men.

Courtship Ideals

Courting in higher ranked Draconians is predetermined before they hatch. Allocated here or there to another equally or higher standing family. Often still their courtships are highly public and drawn out as much as five years. While courtships between everyday Draconians are often over within a year or less. Gems, jewelry, clothing, armor, etc anything of marketable value or heirloom often seals the deal, though rookery space is often the best prize to receive.

Relationship Ideals

Power and strength are important in any form of relationship to the Draconians. Cunning is something that can gather the attention of Draconian but having the power or strength to back it up is even better. Though coin or treasure can ply things from them quicker than their normal base wants as the greed of a draconian is at least rumored to be as large are their suppose cousins in dragons.

Common Etiquette Rules

Physical Greetings
  • Sticking out their tongue to greet. Draconians have sensitive tongues and while they don't flick their tongues like lower reptiles they have adopted the practice of sticking their tongue out at new people. This practice quickly spread as the proper greeting of each other. A wordless quick sticking of the tongue out to taste the other person and see who or what they are.
Verbal Greetings
  • Most of the time there are no verbal greetings, though with dealing with humans they have adopted the basic hello of them. There are still some Dracs who hiss, growl, or make a clicking noise as greeting of their fellow Dracs and strangers.
Emotional Demeanor
  • If there was one way to blanket describe how the Draconians look on an emotional level, it is like they are pissed off at you and you should know what you did to incur their wrath. Angry, brooding, just plain sour-faced more of the time.
Other
  • Tail smacking, while in the past it had been for challenging now it is used as a sign of good show or I am annoyed with you. The tail slapping while no fully set reason is often in context of what is going on between the two Draconians. Agitation, tail smack. congrats, tail smack. Really anything can call for a tail smack.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

  • All Draconians are hatched and raised for the first 2-3 years in a rookery. How nice your rookery depends upon your family's status within Draconian society.
  • While not mandatory for most Dracs, raising Harpy Dragons or bonding with a Harpy Dragon is something seen as a milestone for the higher-ranked Dracs.
  • Eating Dragon eggs or offer dragon eggs for consumption is seen as giving the recipient a vast amount of respect.
  • Brimstone Young, this is the name given to eggs that never hatch or are not viable. They are taken once they do not hatch, a large pyre is built, the mother of the rookery says a few words, and they burn the eggs till they are nothing but ash. Winged Dracs then flap their wings and spread the ash to the winds as a gesture for this to not happen to the next clutch.

Common Taboos

  • Breaking Drac eggs is punishable by death even if the embryo isn't viable.
  • Harming of Harpy Dragons is punishable by up to a year in prison with the smallest sentence being 3months.

History

When the first Draconian stepped clawed foot onto Eiria they did little more than huddle in bands or flights. It was until Phipora Onkaal began pulling the flights together and turning them into a unified front. Living in the foot hills and edges of the Varzik Mountains it was a hard life and they watched the Dwarves live the high-life or at least it seemed as such.   With the leadership of Phipora the Dracs began to become something, her promises of glory and land. her conquest began hitting newer formed Dwarf settlements. Overtaking them one by one till nothing could be done, digging her people in like scale mites on a dragon.   Eventually the Dwarves would let go but never forget as fighting a war on two fronts is never easy. The Draconians would build upon the bones of the Dwarves and minus a few skirmishes or upstarts through out the years with the Dwarves wishing to reclaim what was theirs only to rebuff them countless times as possible testament to the ability to build fortresses though no Drac worth his scales would admit to that.   While part of their history involving the Drassi was lost into the void the history of the Humans trying to invade would not. While it seemed easy to repel them it did little to deter them. It would become tiresome and the Draconians would retreat further into themselves, falling back into a mindset of we shall keep to ourselves. However, this would not last long.   Draconians being proud warriors would put them back in the fray of battle only to end up signing a treaty with the Human Empire. Leading to them regretting their choice. When the Drassi returned from old it gave them an out of the Empire. It was a simple and precise move for them to make. Being able to take home their people while the world seems to erupt into war around them. Again hiding from the world.

Historical Figures
Phipora Onkaal
The first Draconian leader, she was ruthless in battle and loving to her people. Promising riches and wealth to those whoever helped take the first outpost. Seen as one of the best of her time in leadership she brooded many and a few still carry on her name. The rookery in Ackermouth Palace is named after her.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
As with most the Ezana are welcomed anytime within their borders and cities, treated like family in a sense. The Fjorn, Elves, Lyrans, and Lycans are not hated, they aren't exactly friendly either though they are not hostile either. Humans, on the other hand, they do not trust, nor like most of them all thanks to the old empire of the humans. Their neighbors the Orcs, Dwarves, and Lamia while they will not openly attack them they do not trust them and will defend their homes with extreme prejudice. The Drassi they are uncertain of though a fair number would ally with them again. Falkovians are not known yet to them.
