Phyreglass

Deep beneath the island city of Aeydria snake the hidden Phyrechasms that heat the healing springs well known across the world. Within these tunnels flows molten earth from an unknown source that cuts and melts the stone deep. Occasionally these chasms will cool and the lava ceases to flow through the tunnel, at which point prisoners condemned to labor will be sent into the still hot Phyrechasm to search for Phyreglass, faintly tinted blood red glass formed in the slowly cooling tunnels. This highly coveted material forms in small pockets, no more than a few inches across typically, inside the dried lava flows. The glass is perfectly opaque and blood red, and constantly warm. No matter how it is cooled or where it is kept the Phyreglass will always be quite hot and able to ignite highly flammable objects. In large quantities its properties are magnified and capable of igniting wood and coal.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Phyreglass is a deep red color and perfectly opaque with no imperfections found within.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Phyreglass remains hot to the touch and can even burn when enough of it is collected together. While it will not burn itself it is able to ignite flammable materials when collected or left on a flammable material. As such it is highly recommended to transport even the smallest amount of Phyreglass in a fireproofed container.

Compounds

Phyreglass is extremely valuable and rare. Its use varies and new ways of exploiting its properties are constantly being researched. The oldest use of it has been found in ancient weapons where powdered Phyreglass is blended with molten Mithril and forged into a burning blade.

Geology & Geography

Phyreglass is found in cooled lave flows exclusively within the Phyrechasms beneath Aeydria.

Life & Expiration

No examples of Phyreglass have shown any aspect of tarnishing, deteriorating, or cooling. This includes the oldest known samples dating back to the foundation of the city around the year 250.
Odor
Phyreglass gives off a faint carbon smell like that of pure and cleaned charcoal.
Taste
The heat given off by Phyreglass deters most people from attempting to taste it. Those who have inserted samples of the material into their mouth can only recall blistering heat and a texture similar to that of quartz.
Color
The material is a deep blood red and perfectly opaque.
