GoSR-Session 2: Danger at Dunwater
Following the page sent by the town council, the party soon arrived that the Council Hall. Once inside they were met with the sounds of raised voices in heated debate.
Scouts sent out by Eliander Fireborn had found the source of the worrying lizardfolk activity in recent months. It seemed that lizardfolk from all across the mashes had been congregating and forming a war camp deep in the swamps near the headwater of the Dunwater River. This news had the council on edge and arguing what should be done about this potential threat.
Anders Solmor and Manistrad Copperlocks argued strongly for a military response. Mustering the guard and launching an assault on the warcamp before the lizard folk had time to finish preparing their forces.
Eliander Fireborn, Eda Oweland, and Gellan Primewater called for a more cautious approach. Unwilling to risk the safety of the town without more information. As such they had called on the party with a request.
They offered the party 700 gold to travel out the warcamp and gather information about the lizardfolks' forces and intentions. After asking some followup questions and negotiating an extra 100 gold up front for expenses, the party agreed and set about preparing for the venture and getting their ship, the Sea Ghost, ready for it's maiden voyage.
Calling on favors and ties around town they set bout hiring a crew of 5 sailors to serve aboard the Sea Ghost. Next they called in a favor from the Spineback Smugglers, and recruited Joly Grogaugh the peg-legged dwarf to act as bosun and translator. Finally the purchased a significant haul of fish to give as a gift to the lizardfolk.
After a day of preparation and a night relaxing at the The Wicker Goat, they boarded their ship and set out at dawn.
The coarse along the coast was swift and uneventful, quickly sailing along the sea clifs to the east until the came to the outlet of the Dunwater.
Sailing up river into the swamplands they had travelled roughly three miles nland when they came to the sight of an old abandoned township near the banks of the bayou. Slowing to take a look, Silver the owl sensed an approaching danger and began screeching it's warning. As all hands aboard the main deck looked up, a terrible shadow crossed over the sun. Squinting upward through the haze, the sailors let out shouts of alarm and terror as all recognized the flying terror for what is was. A black dragon, young but filled with malice wheeled and dove towards the slowly coasting ship. With no chance of escape the party drew their weapons, hoping to at least die fighting.
Bowbow and Oceanus each prepared spells, waiting for the dragon to come in range. Molly ran out in front, and attempted to placate the beast, offering the large bounty of fresh fish they were transporting. Grey, studying the approaching dragon, had a terrible realization. This dragon was a servant of the Onyz Queen, and it was here for him! He tried to warn the others, but before he could the dragon unleashed its acid breath and BowBow and Oceanus fired off their magics to meet it. Bowbow's ray of sickness struck true, weakening the beast, and Oceanus summoned a terrible specter to cause fear in the dragon. This stopped it's dive short, but it's terrible acid struck the mast, melting it instantly and causing the main sail to crash down onto the deck.
Seeing that Grey had dangerous companions to support him, the dragon hovered over the ship for a moment, and in a ominous growl it said, "I've found you once, I can find you again." then wheeled and flew off into the swamps.
Shaken and confused, the party assessed the damage to the ship. The mask was utterly destroyed, and a replacement would have to be built and installed befoer the sea ghost could move again, this would take at least two days. Joly took charge of directing these repairs will the party decided to go on ahead in the rowboat.
Loading the boat with six barrels of fish, they set out. Nearing the noon they finally spied their destination, large promontory of rock jutting out into a wide lake. Landing the boat on the muddy shoreline, Molly and Oceanus decided to scout the area. Molly followed a set of lizadfolk tracks and found a strong wooden door. Oceanus took to the water and scouted a waterlogged cave entrance, finding a large interior cave and spotting four lizardfolk guards.
They rejoined and decided a straight foreword, diplomatic approach would be best. hauling the barrels of fish up the bank, they knocked on the wooden door to the fortress and waited. After a moment the door opened and five lizardfolk warriors came out, weapons at the ready. They moved to guard the entrance and block the adventurers, but made no hostile moves. After studying them and the proffered fish for a moment, the leader motioned for another to run back into the fort, possibly to bring reinforcement or someone of importance.
