Artifice Coins
Artifice coins are round metallic coins set with gemstones charged with arcane energy. NPC Artificers can harness the energy stored in these coins to infuse mundane objects with magical powers.
Artifice coins are a reward you receive for adventuring. You can spend these special coins to buy magic items. The selection of magic items starts fairly limited, but you can give up items you find on adventures to unlock those items for purchase later (see Reverse Engineering below).
Artifice coins come in three varieties, with higher quality coins being used to purchase rarer items.
Legendary Items. Legendary items can only be bought by tier 4 characters (17th level through 20th level).
Reverse Engineering. Most artificers can only create the default set of items in the table above, but they can learn how to create additional items through reverse-engineering.
An artificer can reverse-engineer an item. This will destroy the item, but will give the artificer the ability to create the item in the future. This process also creates a number of artifice coins in the process, equal to half the coins necessary to create the item (at the lowest coin-quality possible for that item).
Acquiring Artifice Coins. Unfortunately, coin-crafting is a relatively new process, and Artifice coins are incredibly rare. You can't simply purchase them. They're often given as a quest reward or found as treasure on an adventure.
Selling Artifice Coins. Regardless of its quality, you can sell an artifice coin for 50 gp.
Trading Artifice Coins. To keep everybody on a generally even playing field, trading artifice coins from one player character to another is not allowed.
