Shifter

Shifters are found in some of the harshest environments on Eberron. Most of those found in Khorvaire can track their roots to the Eldeen Reaches, but they can make a home almost anywhere and thrive thanks to their physical adaptations.   It has been theorised that shifters are the descendants of lycanthropes, but some of the shifter tribes in the Eldeen claim that lycanthropy was actually a corruption of their innate gifts, which they call Olarune's Blessing. Unlike a lycanthrope, shifter's don't transform fully into an animal form, but instead "shift" to gain some of the physical adaptations of an animal. What form their gifts take aren't bound to genetics, but rather their spiritual connection to the Beast Within, and the environment that they live. Beasthide, longtooth, swiftstride and wildhunt shifters are common and most people know of them, but there are many others! There are aquatic shifters that live in coastal communities, and the cliffwalk shifters are gifted climbers and thrive in mountains.   Shifters are a culturally diverse people, with each tribe and clan observing their own traditions. Some of them feel a bond to the moons of their birth, and carry lunar totems to represent this connection. Others feel a closer connection to their clan's primal spirits, honouring Grandmother Wolf or Grandfather Rat. The shifters of the Eldeen Reaches are guided by Moonspeakers, druids that are tasked with travelling between Shifter settlements and maintaining their bonds. They are important to shifter communities, and help to foster a sense of belonging that shifters in other communities lack.   In 832 YK, the Church of the Silver Flame launched the Silver Crusade, an inquisition to eliminate lycanthropy. Unfortunately, shifters got caught up in this purge, and by the time the crusade had ended their numbers were severely lessened. Though the church later acknowledged that Shifters were not lycanthropes, the damage had already been done and thousands of shifters had been killed. These events have lead to shifters becoming incredibly suspicious of the organised religions practiced in the Five Nations. They view the conflict prone religions of Khorvaire to be terrifying a dangerous.   Their own beliefs are varied and mild, and most practice some form of druidic tradition.
