Black Pit

The Black Pit is a village in northern Breland, nestled in an isolated valley in the Blackcap mountains. The village gets it's name from the gigantic, seemingly bottomless pit that the village is built next to. The inhabitants believe that the pit leads down into Khyber, and occasionally strange noises and smells emanate from the pit.
The village is a depressing shanty town with a mixture of architectural styles, built up from whatever materials the people could gather in the surrounding area. It's a haven for criminals fleeing the law, and has no law enforcement presence. It has a thriving black market, but prices are extortionate.
The pit is lined with caves, and those who have been brave enough to explore them have encountered monsters. The town is also home to a monastery of the Silver Flame, the Monastery of Saint Dioscian the Anchorite, which guards the pit against incursion and attempts to provide spiritual guidance to those who have chosen to live here.
Years ago, a beholder emerged from the pit. It wasn't hostile, and merely questioned the inhabitants of the village about what they were doing there, and then returned into the pit.
