Thaliost

An ancient Aundairian city seized during the Last War, Thaliost was ceded to Thrane under the Treaty of Thronehold. Many of its people bitterly oppose the Thrane occupation, but it's also become a haven for Aundairian followers of the extremist Pure Flame sect; violence often breaks out between these two factions.

Government

Regardless of the chaos involved with occupying the historic city, Thrane's Council of Cardinals are absolutely determined to hold onto control of their prize. The Council has appointed Archbishop Solgar Dariznu as the ruler of the city, and he has been far from gentle in his repression of Aundarian revolutionaries. Burnings at the stake are all too common after dust-ups between fed up commoners and knightly law enforcement.

Defences

The city walls are laid out in the formation of a Star Fort as a way to deflect the damage dealt by artillery projectiles. Within the city, there are further layers of walls and fortifications that partition many neighborhoods from one another and assist law enforcement in maintaining control of the movement of people and supplies.

The Tower of Judgement in the south-central district of the city acts as the beating heart and nexus of administration for the Thranish occupation. A massive garrison of knights' templars are housed and trained within the structure.

History

Thaliost was established more than a millenium and a half ago as an autonomous city-state. 1,000 years before the foundation of the nation of Galifar, Thaliost repelled invasions from the fledgling nation of Karrnath that was led by the legendary Karrn the Conqueror.

It was in Thaliost that the Mark of Passage first appeared on humans that would go on to form House Orien. The Mark of Handling appeared not long after in the western reaches of the city-state's territory.

Once Galifar Wynarn united the continent under his banner, he appointed his five eldest children as the governors of the provinces. Thaliost, the city, retained its historic name, but the territory was renamed after the new monarch: Aundair. Thaliost continued to be a vitally significant city in the fabric of the blossoming civilization, but the administrative capital of Aundair was relocated to Fairhaven.

Thaliost was a hotbed of conflict during The Last War due to its historic significance and strategic location along Scions Sound. In 897, King Kaius I successfully captured the city for a short time before pulling back to shore up his supply lines. A two-year seige and partial occupation by Thrane occured between 912 YK and 914 YK that retracted after the death of the Thranish king and subsequent ascention of the Church of the Silver Flame that cemented Thrane as a theocracy.

Thaliost was conquered and occupied by Thrane in 926 YK during a suprise operation known as the Northern Crusade. This occupation is ongoing and only deepening the resentment between the two nations. The occupation persists to this day, and the promise of liberating Thaliost is a powerful recruitment tool in Aundair as they seek to rebuild their military capacity.

Thaliost was connected to the Karrnathi city of Rekkenmark for most of the cities' shared history via the White Arch Bridge that spanned the waters of Scions Sound. The two were violently severed in 928 YK when the bridge was destroyed. It is unclear who was responsible for the magical conflagration that sundered the colossal bridge since several factions have come forward to claim responsiblity.

Architecture

Thaliost doesn’t look like other Thrane cities with its skyraking towers, magically shaped stonework, tree-lined boulevards, and wide-open spaces. It looks more like Fairhaven, the capital of Aundair.
