Slide Technology
The "Slide" is a piece of Bio-Tech that enables the storage and transfer of one's mental capacity. Basically, human souls can now be stored on Solid State Drives implanted in the C1 vertebrae at birth.
Impact on Society
Death no longer being permanent or inevitable has had several major consequences on society. The traditional value of human life has been lowered. Law enforcement now holds a policy of shooting first and bringing suspects back to life inside of a virtual world in order to "ask questions later". Synthetic bodies are possible, but so are mechanical ones. Hence, there are both Synths; who's organic bodies have either been destroyed, or given up freely; and M.B.E.s, or those who have kept most of their organic body intact, but have chosen to "upgrade" certain aspects of it with Mechanical Body Enhancements. There are also those who are a combination of both. Soul transference into a completely mechanical body is forbidden by the NUN.
"True Death"
The only way to accomplish a "True Death", or one where you cannot be brought back to life with a new body, is for the "Slide" to be destroyed whilst having no backups. This can be done by removal and physical destruction of the SSD implant, or with an E.M.P. Although outlawed by the NUN, E.M.P. bullets can be found on the black market from time to time.
