Earth Year 2587

The birthplace of humanity has changed greatly through the rise of the Imperium of Man. Its great oceans have frozen, as an attempt to reverse global warming has gone wrong, many of the old cities have been covered by the ice, and the new cities are over the ocean, built to float in the event of the ice cracking. The Cities are hives of corruption and suffering, with layers of buildings placed over top of each other, and as a result, the largest cities have populations greater than one billion people. Due to the changed climate, agriculture is nearly impossible, and is not viable to feed the population. The planet is ringed by orbiting stations where food is grown, these are defended by military stations placed further out. The only place where agriculture is possible is the city of Terra, named after the planet itself, it is the only sign of what the once prosperous world was. Destruction of the stations, could starve the entire population of 40 billion in less than a year. To make use of the resources the planet still has, mining is conducted under the ice, the entire oceans are not frozen through, and it is extremely dangerous. Slave workers are worked to death deep in the ocean mines, thousands die daily from equipment failure, hypothermia, the bends, and ice collapse.
