Telepathy and Other Mental Intrusions

Most extraordinaries in my story's world are able to communicate through telepathy. But it has to be with someone they have an emotional connection to. It can't just be with a random stranger. Although....Vampires do have the ability to reach in and manipulate a human's thoughts. But that is a separate thing.   All humans and extraordinaries have natural mental barriers, which are capable of blocking telepathy and most mental intrusions. Vampires are the only known extraordinaries that are able to bypass that barrier. But with other extraordinaries, telepathy must be an agreed upon thing. Both sides must be willing to lower their mental barriers and let the other in. It is considered to be a sign of ultimate trust in most civilizations.   Humans are able to lower their mental barriers and telepathically send their thoughts. But most humans do not like the vulnerability that comes with that kind of communication. There are many folk tales from Germany and Norway that center on the consequences of lowering that mental barrier and letting someone in. Several horror movies have been made about it, the most notable one was Barrier, which was based on a Michael Crichton book of the same name and produced and directed by Steven Spielberg.   If an extraordinary tries to send a telepathic message to someone who has not lowered their barrier, that message just dings off the barrier and does not go through.   It is possible to break a person's mental barrier, but it is painful and traumatic. It is considered to be unreasonably cruel and a profound breach of trust. That is true even among the fey.   Queen Preyuna of the fey is the only extraordinary who is able to magically block telepathic messages from reaching their intended destinations. She exploits that ability only when she feels the absolute need to do so. That need has only come up because of her interactions with Isellta and Mark Caten. Otherwise, she has never made use of it.
