Uzumaki

"The Uzumaki had been demons, creatures just as skilled in all manners of combat. Their charisma allowed them to twist the truth, without ever actually lying, with such great ease, they could convince you to murder a stranger. Seduce you, ensnare and twist until they could no longer be bothered with your lives."   "In the Warring States Era, the Uzumaki held a reverential esteem in the shinobi world that was matched by the Senju as two of the most powerful clans with indomitable life forces and chakra, with the Hyuuga and Uchiha occupying the seat as the two great doujutsu clans in the world. During this time, though they were rightfully feared and respected and were the complementary half of the Senju, their distant relatives, it wasn’t as widespread as it’d later become. The world learned, and in its horror, found a common enemy many nations agreed had to be dispatched."   Physical Attributes:
  • Uzumaki’s can stay under water for a longer time than most people. Their spleens are larger than most people’s, which allow them to take in less air to spend more time under water.

Naming Traditions

Family names

  • Uzumaki
  • Uzuki

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

  • The Uzumaki developed their own sealing language that had both more depth and more versatility than others

Culture and cultural heritage

  • When it comes to the Uzumaki’s fighting style, compared to the varied and warlike Uchiha or the many-skilled Senju, theirs comprised less of finesse and variety and more of strength, speed, and berserker states that render their attacks brutal, wild, unpredictable, and utterly punishing. Coupled with their life force and regenerative abilities, many Uzumaki were known for their berserker rages no matter the discipline (like taijutsu or kenjutsu), and their wildness earned them the reputation of being savages. Their bestial tenacity was to the extreme that many Uzumaki would fight to the death, even while heavily injured or on death’s door that also earned them the comparison to being like cockroaches.
  • In a way, the Uzumaki’s red hair became more of a warning to potential enemies than something positive.
  • Seals were part of daily life in Uzushio for shinobi and civilians alike. Aside from home security and storage, they could be used for communication, medicine, lighting, etc.
  • They were recognized in the shinobi world as one of the most powerful clans with indomitable life forces and chakra.
  • Records of all the Uzumaki's born are kept in the main house in scrolls as well as information about their birth/what faction of the clan they were born from.

Shared customary codes and values

Mottos:
  • “Lock ‘em down!”
  • “Endure, and in enduring, grow strong:" A motto after the fall of Uzushio when the Uzumaki were hunted. A plea/prayer to survive and a subtle reference to their long lives.
  • “We outlive our enemies.”

Average technological level

  • Incredible sealing
  • Versatile sealing style
  • The Uzumaki developed a jutsu known as Chakra Deflection. Like Karin’s Chakra Suppression, Chakra Deflection allows the user to alter the frequency of their chakra to make it almost impossible to accurately pinpoint. Nagato often capitalized on the technique in conjunction with the Six Paths of Pein and his black chakra receivers, making him nearly impossible to detect.
  • They utilized masks crafted with special properties that would allow those related to the Uzumaki to utilize the masks and the special ninjutsu that was contained in them.
  • A precursor to the Healing Resuscitation Regeneration Technique (that Tsunade adapted for med-nin), would allow an Uzumaki to create a formulaic array that could proper disperse and concentrate their healing chakra without the chakra control necessary to wield it.
  • Stasis fuinjutsu infused Yang Release to keep a patient in a state of suspense that would neither allow for degeneration or healing until a patient was ready. Such was useful for formulating healing for advanced, or critical cases. It would only be later on that said fuinjutsu would be repurposed for med-nin, as the usage by Uzumaki themselves would largely be lost by Uzushio’s destruction.
  • While longevity and extremely skilled in sealing techniques, the clan was very adapt in water style ninjutsu’s as well. Versed well in tracking people, those that came into Uzushiogakure without permission often didn’t live very long.

Art & Architecture

  • There were bridges built across the rivers and islands to the mainland that the residents could travel on to get to where they needed to be. These were also placed with seals that no one was able to undo unless they had a member from Uzushiogakure to unlock said seal. So no one that wasn’t a clan member can get into the main island.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

  • Due to the increased number of female Uzumaki, all shrines in Uzushio are cared for by priestesses. These priestesses are allowed to marry and have children, unlike most others from other countries who are not allowed to do so.
  • The Uzumaki are known to wear necklaces that they can use to pray with if they are unable to get to a shrine. These necklaces are simple in design; three blue crystal tomoe held on by a small gold plate and held around the neck with a simple golden chain. They do, however, hold much significance to an Uzumaki and losing one is considered a grave error on their behalf. They are routinely cared for with special oils to keep their shine and their beauty. If the Uzumaki and their necklace are separated from one another, so long as the necklace is found, it can be buried in the grave of the Uzumaki long after their death. Each necklace is engraved with the Uzumaki's name and date of birth so that they can easily be put with the Uzumaki in case of the above scenario.
  Wedding:
  • Last three days.
  • Whites and blues are associated with good fortune. Uzushiogakure brides almost always wear white and incorporate blue into their culinary and decorative choices. While their ensembles vary from delicate silk costumes to sleek evening gowns, their white clothes are consistent symbols of virtue and patience.
  • Brides who want to honor the Shintô tradition will wear a wataboshi, a white silk hood or headdress, over the bukin takashimada (bun) in their hair.
  • After the wedding , they go to the beach to celebrate with the rest of the village , in which there are plenty of food , drinks , and merriment for the couple.
  • When an Uzumaki becomes an adult, a shinobi, finishes an apprenticeship, or achieves any sort of milestone, they get some sort of tattoo as a rite of passage, which is done by their mentor. Civilian Uzumaki get it done when they finish an apprenticeship/or finish a trade school, often with a different signature icon or style to show the kind of trade and/or where they learned. Carpenters get something with wood motifs, seal masters likely their own original seals, teachers with some specific style, etc. For the shinobi Uzumaki, when they become genin their academy sensei/family head/parent does it for them.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Birth ceremonies last three days. Water births are a common occurrence.
  • Mothers are given a gift from the elders.
  • Babies are baptized in the ocean within a week of their birth. A priestess will draw blood across the baby’s forehead (for power) and then dip them into the ocean for protection.

Coming of Age Rites

  • Receiving a tattoo based on the milestone or accomplishment they achieved.

Funerary and Memorial customs

  • Funeral ceremonies last three days.
  • They're seen as a celebration, as individuals celebrate the life of the loved one who had passed. There’s a 3 day party that carries on with food, music, and tales of the passed that usually starts the next day. Stories are often told about the deceased Uzumaki's live, from their good deeds to funny stories.
  • It's encouraged to be positive about the death of the individual, and it's seen as disrespectful to mourn for more than three days in the cases of natural deaths.
  • However, it's seen as more acceptable to mourn the unnatural deaths (such as those from illnesses), miscarriages, or those of children. This is due to these types of deaths being more uncommon in Uzushio society.
  • Uzumaki’s have a death shrine where people can go to pay condolences/wishes /hopes for their dead. Everyone has a small section there with their possessions that aren’t passed on to their family in a sealed scroll with the dead’s name on it. It’s not an individual shrine to an individual person.
  • There is a specific shrine priestess that handles the cremation of the body with the family watching , and she scatters the ashes out over the ocean. The priestess keeps a record of all that’s died and how they died.

Common Taboos

  • Extensive mourning.
  • It’s considered dishonorable to not go to one of the dead’s party unless there is extreme circumstances that doesn’t allow a person to go. There will still be some Uzumaki’s who turn their nose down on a person who doesn’t show up.

Common Myths and Legends

  • As for the Dragon statue/memorial, it is a large rock that has been carved and chiseled. There is a black pearl from the ocean that is placed in the Dragon’s pearl and cannot be removed due to a powerful seal. The Statue’s Creation/Existence revolves around Uzu folklore that I made up. The reason for the whirlpools surrounding Uzushio is due to the ancient Dragon lurking in the red sea. It is an ancient spirit that has kept the island safe for generations and is said to live among the people inside their souls. This is the reason for the Uzumaki’s longevity and large chakra reserves.
  • Uzumaki held a firm belief in the fact that their dead will become one with the sea and protect Uzushiogakure from attack.
  • It’s believed that if an Uzumaki isn’t buried at their sea, then their soul will become restless and wander the nations.
