the kiss of Lessoun

Lessoun, the red moon orbiting Eam'Rel, has been associated with death and closure in almost every human culture. Lessoun is called "the Reaper", and on every single one of his twelve yearly cycles, the people of Eam'Rel perform their different rituals in order to prepare mortal bodies that are soon to pass, and calm the souls of the departed.   It is said that as humans reach old age, Lessoun places on them his mark and claims them for death. This mark has many names, but the most common one is the kiss, mostly because it is a counterpart of the onset of adolescence, which is called the kiss of Jadel, "the Charmer", the white moon associated with life and fertility.   The kiss of Lessoun is placed on a human when their eyesight is dimmed to the point that they cannot rely on it any more. Even though not all old people suffer from it, it is indeed very common, especially in the south, that when one stops seeing this world, they say that the Reaper has kissed them and granted them with visions of the soul-world, and it is not long before they are actually dead.   The saeli-tuk, somewhat more educated, pragmatic and less superstitious than the southerners, claim that the degeneration of the vision is a defect in the eyes of the southerners that progresses rapidly as they reach old age. In their notes they have detailed notes what they call "white veil", an ailment of the eyeball that resembles a thin white veil. Whether it is something that happens inside the eye or over it is as yet unknown, since the people of Castaponda and Indice would not let us thoroughly examine the elderly, or dissect a deceased person's eyeball. It is certain, however, that this white veil gets progressively thicker, and prevents the vision. It is remarkable that the first stages of the degeneration are very slow, but once the thin white veil appears, it is a matter of months before the vision disappears altogether, and after that weeks before the person dies.
