The Magic of Eadus - Cosmic Energy

On Eadus, magic runs through the air, through every living being, every cloud and every grain of sand, in a never-ending cycle. This magic is described differently in every culture, but equal to all, is the belief that magic is central to the integrity of the world. In that way it's like the invisible thread that sews together the patchwork that is the world.   Guardians of Magic Though this magic flows through every living thing on Eadus, there are only a select few that can harness it. Those who are, the so-called Guardians of Magic or simply Guardians, are able to wield the power after their own will.   The Guardians inherently draw power from nature, using the energy that flows through it to do various things such as telekenesis (lifting and moving things with one's mind), , bending the elements, enchantments and so on. But the world is not an endless well of energy, from which you can keep on harvesting more and more energy without any limits. Instead any energy drawn will have to have been taken from somewhere else in nature. This can be done in different ways, but Guardians in their traditional extent (one creature controlling energy, through their own will, by wielding it, in ways that respect nature's cycle) will usually pull it from from themselves.   The problem however comes when someone who is not born a Guardian uses magic by drawing it through someone or something else, therefore turning the Guardian as a mediator.

Magic Mediators

Someone who is not born with the gift of being a Guardian, can on Eadus control and wield magic, if they draw it through something or someone that has direct access to the energy running through nature.   Usually a Guardian is limited by their own strength. They can use the energy of nature to do magic, but if they go too far, they can risk killing themselves. To avoid this, multiple guardians can stand together to perform a spell, therefore broadening the vault of energy that they draw from. But still it's a closed circle.   This is not the case for someone using a mediator.   If one uses a Guardian as a middle man, one evades the limits of the Guardians body and strength. Someone using a mediator can therefore draw directly from nature, for an example from flowers, trees or another being - even another human.

Types of Mediators

The Hierarchy of the Mind

The type of mediator that one uses, is important for what magic is drawn (how fine it is) and how it can be used. The higher level of sentience that mediator has, the finer it is, and the more complicated of things can it be used for. This is called The Hierarchy of the Mind   The Hierarchy of mind decides what kind of magic can be perfomed.     1st Stage The 1st Stage of the Mind is characterized by a creature being able to see the actual energy of network. To do this, one has to transcend the typical limitations of matter and become a part of the energy itself, instead of just the network.   The 1st stage of Mind, is unique in that no creature alive has ever reached it. The description of being immersed in the force of nature, comes instead from the ancient texts left behind by the Architects, a people who lived on Eadus before humans, and who are believed to have been related to the God's.   2nd Stage To reach the 2nd stage, a being has to be able to reflect on the world around them and ask deliberate questions about their place in it such as "why are we here?".

  • Humans are the only beings left of Eadus who reach the 2nd Stage of the Mind. For this reason human Guardians are the preferred mediators of the most powerful and rich (such as the emperor and his court).
3rd Stage A creature is placed in the 3rd Stage of the Mind if it can feel social emotions, such as shame, embarrassment and compassion.   Examples of Guardian Species who reach 3rd Stage of Mind:
    • Dragons
    • Wales
4th Stage The Fourth Stage of Mind is defined by a creature being able to control their actions to some sort of an extent. Their actions are therefore not completely decided by instincts.
    • Most vertebrates

    Size and strength of Creature

The hierarchy of the Mind describes what kind of magic can be done with each mediator, but something else entirely decides how much magic one can use, how much force one can exert, with each mediator and that is size and strength.   The stronger and larger a creature is (in physical manner) the more magic one can draw through them. For this reason one will see the Emperor or other powerful people in Eadus having up to a dozen human mediators through which they pull magic. Humans are small when compared to beings such as dragons. Therefore numbers have to compensate for this.   This is also the reason that dragons are often used to do heavy magical work, such as lifting into and holding cities up into the air. Their large size, lets someone pull a lot of magic through them at once, therefore letting huge structures such as mountains and cities be pulled up into the air, but dragons
