Delver (Dell-ver)

I never saw such fury. He never shed a tear. Not a drop. Not the moment he found out his wife and children were dead. Not the moment he bid farewell to hearth and hold. He strode out into the snow with nothing more than the cloak on his back, the spear at his side, and the fire in his belly that would not extinguished save being slaked with goblin blood. I never felt sorry for no greenskins before, but I did that day. I know none would leave alive from that band once he'd found them.
- From the annals of Copperhead Safehold
Delvers are the hardy mountain dwellers and miners of Dyrn. They are counted amongst the First Races of Dyrn, created by the Dragonform Gods. The forge god Gyrd found their bodies fully formed in the very depths of Dyrn. He took a perilous journey to find a craftsman who might be able to bring them to life. He brought Moradin back to Dyrn who used the last vestiges of the power of creation, flowing through an ancient lava chamber known as the Godsforge, to craft a heart for each of the first delvers. Once crafted, these hearts brought the delvers to life and they began their own perilous journey through the ancient underdark to the region closer to the surface, which delvers now call the delvehame.

Physical Description

Delvers are stout, hardy, muscled humanoid individuals. A typical delver stands between 1.2 and 1.5 meters in height, but their muscled physique often sees them weighing more than the taller surface races. Delver skin is tough with thick sturdy calcified pads that are almost stonelike and grow harder and less flexible as the delver ages. Skin colours come in shades vary from a light pink to a deep orange-brown or almost black complexion. Male Delvers are bearded, and in most Delver cultures, the beard is considered a sign of status and bearing. Female Delvers are not bearded, but will often display a light fuzz of facial hair if examined closely. Hair colour can vary from black to brown to blonde to red. Eye colours are likewise similar to the typical eye colours seen in humans, with the addition of a reddish brown iris tint unique to Delvers.   Delvers have excellent night vision and can see on dim light as if it was bright light and darkness as if it was dim light. Their musculature makes them impressively strong, especially for their size.

Alignment

Traditionally Delvers have a lawful alignment. Duty to hearth and hold is vitally important to Delver society and this understanding is taught to all Delvers from a young age.   Traditionally Delvers have alignments of either Good or Neutral. Delvers of evil alignment, in time, may find their beliefs incompatible with those of their Safehold, and may find themselves driven out or marginalised. There are a separate race of delvers whose society tends to the evil alignments, known as Duergar, or deep-dwarves.
