Halflings

While Halflings are certainly people of short stature, they are not short of spirit. Halflings are brave and lucky individuals who have a long history of adventuring, traveling, and cavorting. Halflings are found across Halcadia but three major halfling nations exist. The first, and likely the most common, is the nation of Zenosia, which the region is named for. The second nation is a bit harder to find, preferring to keep to themselves in the tangled forests of Western Corvuxus. Finally, the third nation lives among the Orisian delta.   The Zenosians have a long history of being excellent tacticians and aggressively neutral. They will not try to take over your land, but they also will not surrender their own. Zenosians have a saying, "The best way to have a comfortable life, is to make your own." And that remains true amongst most Zenosian Halflings, they want nothing more that to live in their comfortable little holes, eating their delightful bread and drinking fine wine, but they cannot live that way if they are subjugated by one of the larger peoples, so they aggressively protect their homeland. Zenosia is also known for its wine varieties, and many Halfling owned vineyards have won awards for their wine. A few Zenosian generals have made names for themselves by lending out their services to other armies with the understanding that they will not attempt redirect their war efforts towards Zenosia. The traditional Zenosian lodging is to hollow out a hill, maybe one with your vineyard on top, and make it as comfortable as possible. The vast country side of Zenosia is pocketed with little hamlets carved into the sides or hills, covered in vineyards, gardens, and farms. The port city of Halcadon is a bit of a different story, and is instead a sprawling metropolis of marble and stone standing on top of a tall hill.   The Halflings of Corvuxus are a different story. In fact, many of the larger folk consider it a rumor that little people live in the overgrown underbrush of The Singing Forest. This is just how the druidic leaders like it. This nation of halflings has no official name, however the people of Corvuxus have begun calling them Tylwyth, or wee ones. These Halfings live in a loose matriarchy, where the leaders of each group is a skill Druid who uses her abilities to guide and hide her people. A handful of distinct groups live in the Singing Forest, however they often meet up to engage in festivals. For food, they use what they call forest-gardens. As the nomadic tribes move about the forest, they encourage particular sections of the forest to bear more fruit or attract more prey than others, ensuring that along each stop of their annual rounds, they have enough for their tribe. The Tylwyth also use their cultivation methods and their diminutive stature to make the pathways difficult for large creatures to move about in the forest freely, twisting brambles and vines in such a way that limits the movements of large folk, but provides easy pathways for themselves, if you know where to look. Other folk who find themselves in the Singing Forest are almost certainly being watched at all times. If the Tylwyth find them to be harmless, they will gently guide the intruder away from the heart of the forest, but malevolent intruders may find essential survival items to suddenly go missing or their food has been replaced with river stones.   Last, but certainly not least, is the Halflings of the Orisian delta. While these halflings certainly call that river delta their home, they can really be found throughout Halcadia adventuring, keeping taverns and inns, or simply enjoying a foreign countryside. The River Halflings, as they are known, find great pleasure in hospitality, both their own and experiencing others. In the delta, River Halflings live in wooden structures built on stilts, to avoid the annual floodwaters, and they have mastered a variety of forms of irrigation in order to make the most out of those floods. These agricultural communities have played essential roles in the development of the cities in Archuria, and thus have made a good number of halfling landowners quite wealthy. River Halflings have a tradition of sending their young adults who are not quite ready for a boring daily job out into the wider world to see what they can, and maybe move away from home, to start a business or simply live among others.
