Telgar Hold (Tell-gar)

Telgar Hold is one of the Major Holds in the Northern Continent. It bordered on the east Bitra Hold, on the south Igen Hold, on the southwest Ruatha Hold and on the north-west Crom Hold. In the past, Telgar Hold was formerly beholden to Telgar Weyr for protections and tithes; while Thread no longer falls, the two enjoy a close relationship for some generations now thanks to the shared bloodline between Lady Lenore  and Weyrwoman Lenna

Government

Like many Holds, Telgar is ruled over jointly by a Lord and a Lady; the current dynast is headed by Lord Tevarin and Lady Lenore.   It is Lady Lenore that holds claim to the Hold's history-steeped bloodline, with Lord Tevarin hailing from the upper echelons of Telgar's upper class. Together, the two have had 3 children, as well as one ward they look after that they raised as their own.

  • Evaren, son of Wilamina & ward of Tevarin and Lenore

Industry & Trade

Telgar is one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, of the major Holds.   Telgar Hold houses the prestigious Smithcraft, churning out all manner of fine craftsmenship. Farriers and blacksmiths are sent here from all over Pern to learn skills to take back home. Telgar is famous for its etching and engraving, and its skill at producing all types of printed fabric, silk screen, and batik. Other minor industrial Crafts have their home here as well; the Smiths are supplied by the nearby Mining Crafthall, who is responsible for digging up the precious metals and gems buried in the mountains here, as well as the Techcrafting Hall that is responsible for all technological advancements and quality of life assurances.   Beyond the walls of the Hold, the vast fields in Telgar produce most of the grain consumed throughout the north. If Benden is said to have the best wine, then Telgar is their counter with the finest beer brewed from grain.

History

Telgar Hold was initially founded as a mining Hold first, with tremendous deposits of iron, copper, lead, zinc, vanadium, and cola in the mountains surrounding the area. The area was not entirely suitable for crops, and there was little need to protect the vegetation from Thread; instead, it was easier for miners and smiths to seek refuge in the caves and tunnels and had little to fear from a threat that could not eat stone, metal, or water. Gradually, as the demand increased to expand farms into what little fertile soil was available below the Hold, a Weyr was later established to give protection to the Hold itself. Telgar Hold quickly grew in prominence as a Hold rich in natural resources and good grain, and even housed the Woodcraft before it moved to Lemos Hold.

Climate

Telgar Hold often has some rough weather over the course of a Turn, known for unforgiving winters and harsh conditions. The main Hold tends to get snowed in during the cold season, so it must be self-sufficient. It may not be uncommon to see workers armed with flamethrowers, clearing the worst of the snow away from the stores and stocks for access, and after particularly rough storms and blizzards, Telgar will send out patrols of Handlers and Guards to make sure those living in the small outlying cotholds are alright, and to render aid if necessary. In the milder springs and summers, itinerant harpers can bring the alarm back to Telgar if help is needed in a small hold, but in winter the snow is usually too deep for a single man to make the circuit safely. The Telgar Weyrleader may lend a support system of Weyrlings if they so desire, and normally provides rescue riders in the case of an avalanche.
