A meteor lands on Earth containing a previously unseen mineral. It emits a signal that converts all organic matter into a kind of "spirit energy" that is tangible and can be harnessed through willpower. All non-human life starts to die so a group of scientists and engineers use the spirit energy to find the origin of the meteor and make it a new home for humans (only a few million are selected and have their memories wiped while the rest are left behind, supposedly to die). Discovering bits and pieces of an ancient civilisation there and its language (which they are for some reason able to read), they settle on the name Draglax which means Paradise in that language.
