Disunion: New Village & Downtown

A post-apocalyptic setting, specifically two areas located somewhere in what was called the United States of America about 100 years ago. Downtown used to be a peaceful settlement just beginning to recover and thrive on its own with minimal help from the traveling networks of traders and Geek Squad tinkers. Not far from a power station and with well-constructed canals, families had their own plots of land and gardens to support themselves in "the suburbs." There were a few unsavory elements banished for stealing or refusing to work who inhabited the dilapidated apartments and warehouses elsewhere in town, but these mostly kept to themselves. But that was before the tainted appeared. Now, Downtown is a no man's land of sorts, at least for anyone who hasn't been tainted by the shadow creatures that no one can explain. People who were smart gave up their homes in Downtown and moved a few miles away to the nearby farms, where they built a central inn and surrounding shops called New Village. Anyone who stayed in Downtown either became tainted or failed to survive.
