Session 1: Hideaway

General Summary

While heading south Riyo, Olaf, Red and Esteriel encountered an elderly, elven bard named Kanetsu Mori, making camp for the night. The party joined him and he shared with them the news that the Empire nation of Pelonia had invaded Hivokia, enforcing a trade blockade over the port city of Demi while forces made landfall and engaged in a grueling battle with Lord Satochi of Koga Province and his forces. Kanetsu recalled that Lord Satochi had been captured and that his daughter, Lady Satochi was rallying her forces and planning a counter attack at the nearby Daikoku village.   Riyo revealed to the party that she used to employed as a soldier by Lord Satochi and the group decided that in the morning they would head to the village to see if they could find work with Lady Satochi. That night the group shared food with Kanetsu and Esteriel shared out her musical instruments to the group who accompanied the bard in a song while Red the Ranger used Esteriels art supplies to draw the scene to commemorate it.   When morning broke Kanetsu continues on his way north and the party begin travelling to Daikoku village. Their journey brings them through the outskirts of the High Wind forest where they encounter a tabaxi monk being chased by goblins. The heroes intervein in their chase, and after dispatching the goblins the party turned their attentions to the tabaxi who they discovered was named Jenji.   He told the party that he was a member of the Monks of the Falling Leaves and that his brothers and sisters had been ousted from the temple by Pelonian forces and were living as refugees in Daikoku village. The Abbot of the order had sent Jenji on a scouting mission to watch the invaders and report back on their activities. Reds keen nose informed her that, while he held it well, Jenji was drunk. Olaf gleaned that Jenji was hiding something from them and he and Riyo interrogated Jenji, Riyo physically bringing the other Tabaxi to the ground.   Under this onslaught, Jenji admitted that he had taken a diversion on his way back from the mission to bring 2 barrels of high quality ale, brewed by the Monks, to a goblin hideout to sell. He directed them to the hideout, telling them that it was just past a footbridge over a fast running river and left to return to Daikoku Village while the heroes took a short rest before travelling towards the hide out.   On coming to the footbridge the heroes found that the hideaway was a tall, fortresslike building, obscured from the path by thick shrubberies and evergreens. Leaning against the wall they could see a tall hobgoblin in chainmail armour. Olaf pulled a patch off of the inside of his robe which expanded and turned into a ladder, to the amazement of the party. While he, Esteriel and Red crossed the river using the ladder as a bridge and disappearing into the undergrowth, Riyo boldly strode onto the bridge, calling out to the hobgoblin, distracting him from the rest of the parties slow and stealthy advance. Red caught sight of 2 more goblins hidden on either side of the path. As tensions grew in the stand off between Riyo and the hobgoblin they both laid hands on their weapons. Olaf took this as the signal to spring the ambush, leaping from the undergrowth and swinging his axe down to kill the hobgoblin. At the same time Red fired an arrow, killing another goblin and the party turned to the third and final enemy.   The party surveilled the hideaway. Olaf used his ladder and Red used her shifter athleticism to climb up high enough to see through the arrow slits that seemed to be the only opening, revealing inside another four goblins lounging in an antechamber near the structures only entrance while another hobgoblin, a gnoll and a tabaxi sat in consultation in the main chamber.    While this was happening Riyo had noticed two horses penned in stalls at the front of the building. She proposed that they light the horses hay on fire, unsetting the horses so that they caused a commotion to draw the goblins out. The party hid in the bushes across the path from the door and Riyo set the trap. When the horses began to kick as their stalls the goblins came out to see what what going on and the party sprung on them. Reinforcements came from the back rooms and Riyo and Olaf charged forward to engage them while Red fought with her shortswords and Esteriel summoned frost against their enemies. Red was knocked unconscious by the gnoll and Olaf retreated to defend Esteriel while she healed her. The tabaxi overwhelmed Riyo, striking a blow that knocked her unconscious before advancing on the party. Olaf warded her off and she fled, leaving her body guard to die under the parties attacks.    While the rest of the party tended to Riyo, Olaf searched the hideaway for any signs of the tabaxi, finding a strongbox of coins and a scroll of control flames which he used to extinguish the fire. On searching further the party discovered a trapdoor leading to a underground escape passage. The heroes barred the trapdoor and decided to rest at the hideaway for the remainder of the day and night.
