Wood Gate

A fortified settlement, standing on guard for those who wish to travel to and from Seswichshire.

History

"Ah, let me tell you a short tale about the Greentoe family and their frontier fortress that guards the entrance to the Seswichshire Woods along the Duke Trail that leads from the capital of Marionne to the Naulish border town of Kepool. The Greentoe family was many in numbers, and still is, making up the majority of the settlement of Wood Gate. A family of savvy woodsmen and women, they brave the beasts that come from the Seswichshire woods and raiding tribes of Wood Elves that launch attacks against the fortified settlement. Founded in 81FI, the small yet sturdy settlement has stood the test of time against hostile forces of both nature and greed, backed by its high palisade walls and archers which are stationed in towers overlooking the roadways into and out of Wood Gate. Vital to the wagon trains that used to bring trade to and from the capital, Seswichshire, the settlement is now a haven for ground bound travelers and merchants that cannot afford to use the Lightning Rail for transit as well as a stop in for the clay miners that work to the north west of the town near Lake Bray to restock their camps and get some well needed rest and relaxation. "
- Brunithor Gustonn; A Guide to Marionne Volume One

The settlement of Wood Gate boasts an iron banded, wooden palisade wall over ten meters in height, with even taller towers of banded iron logs with solid stone foundations. A moat, diverted from Lake Bray, surrounds the Greentoe Manor and acts as the settlements last line of defense against intruders. Upon it's small isle, the Greentoe manor boasts its own palisade wall, complete with smaller watch towers which the families guards keep watch from day and night.

Industry

A decent sized farming community exists in the Reeveship of Wood Gate, providing vital crops to Seswichshire, as well as a clay pit that is to the north west of the settlement. Numerous logging camps are situated to the east, along the edge of the Seswichshire woods, and often archers from Wood Gate are hired as armed guards or guides for the logging companies that operate near by.

Architecture

Sturdy log buildings on river stone foundations make up all but the manor, which is constructed from yellow clay bricks and green copper-glazed roof tiles. The majority of the buildings in the settlement are designed and sized for halflings, but a smattering of buildings accustomed to larger folk dot the settlement. Rounded doors, and windows, adorned with blue stained wood and brass knockers and fittings break up the browns of the dirt roads and log buildings. Some houses have the luxury of brick chimneys while the others have cock-eyed tin chimneys with pointed caps adorning them.

Geography

Located to the east of Lake Bray, the artificial moat dug out to surround the isle that Greentoe manor sits upon winds into the settlement and back out again. Surrounded by farmers fields and gently rolling hills, the Seswichshire Woods to the east are always in sight when outside the walls or upon their watch towers.
