Redale

A bustling village situated on the Red Creek, known for its Brewery.

History

"I will tell you this, about the Redaleians and their town, a hearty and stubborn folk they are. The small yet lively village of Redale was founded in the year 217FI, by a group of families that came from West Seswichshire to start their own logging community. Unbeknownst to the families, was a haunted hill that lay to the south, unapproachable from the thorp of Tyhill, after which the seemingly normal hill was named. Dark things plagued those families during the first years of their settlement, passing it off as bad luck and being deep within the woods.

Over the years, the families grew larger, attracting more settlers to their area with the construction of a hunting lodge and brewery; for which the village is regionally famous for. With the unfortunate events the settlers faced, they formed a militia to defend the village, and constructed a formal conscription for the residents in the event of an attack. Fighting side by side, through the generations, the Redaleians have held back the evils that occasionally creep into their village to pray upon the sick and sleeping children of which it favours.

To finish off this tale of Redale, I will leave you with a nursery rhyme which they sing to their children as they lay in their beds:

'Dear child, dear child sleep sweetly tonight. The ghosts of Tyhill will give you a fright.
Clutch closely your symbol of the Silver Flame, or the ghosts of Tyhill will take all but your name.'"
- Brunithor Gustonn; A Guide to Marionne Volume One

The village of Redale has no real traditional defenses other than the creek that runs along the south of the village. The Redaleians are all trained in combat, from the youngest to the oldest, so that they don't have to rely upon anyone else to defend them. Strategic caches of weapons around the village, and a raised hill which can be blocked off at the road by the deployment of spiked fences that lay off to the side of the road. The Redale Hall and the Militia Barracks are both fortified to withstand attack to house the sick and elderly or injured in the event of an attack.

Industry

This creekside town has farmers in cleared fields to the northwest and southwest that provide its necessary food supplies, as well as a strong and thriving collective of fishers. The main trade of the village is the Redale Brewery which employs the majority of the residents in various roles from porters to brewmasters. After the success of Redale Brewery's Redaleian Ale, the wealth of the town grew exponentially. A number of stores sell their wares to tourists that come to visit the brewery and fish the Red Creek, as well as travelers passing through on foot.

Guilds and Factions

House Ghallanda has officially given the Redale Brewery its seal as a 'Notable Bar', and set up trade with it to sell Redale Brewery products at its establishments around Deriv. Other than that presence, the village is too small to attract the attention of any other notable guilds or Houses.

Architecture

The personal homes of the villagers are rather small but well built. Talented carpentry skills were passed down from a few of the original families that settled in the village many years ago, and the carpenters here build strong as to act as protection in the event of an attack. Hand-hewed log structures with river-stone foundations and chimneys, with a varying of thatch and wood shake shingle roofs. White washed walls, and wattle fences stick out from the greens around them and the greys, reds and blues of the river-stone foundations they sit upon. While they are nothing special the buildings themselves hold a certain charm that could captivate anyone, if they were to visit.

The large river-stone tower that looks over the village from its raised hill, is a crooked structure supported with large buttresses that ward against it tipping off the hill during heavy rains, and give it the look of a gauntlet reaching into the sky due to its uneven battlements made from river rocks.

Geography

Situated in the Seswichshire Woods, and on the bank of Red Creek, the rolling hills around Redale mask the area from sight. Sprawling pine forests untouched by settlers, hide dark secrets beneath the root strewn hill tops.

Natural Resources

Redale has an abundance of wood in caches from the surrounding Seswichshire Woods. The Red Creek provides a steady source of fish, and a source of stone from the river-rocks in the Creek as well as clay from the banks of the creek. The farms in and around Redale provide a bounty of wheat and grains, as well as livestock such as goats and cattle.
