Overview as characters understand it:

The world of Demorrah is much like earth. Magic runs through it, giving life to every plant and animal. The blood of this magic, called mana, wells up through the ground in concentrated pools, and certain types of beings can pull it straight out of the air. The connection between the two is unknown, but it is believed that these magical creatures were once normal creatures that drank too often from the pools and became infused with the magical energy there.  

World History:

When the planet began, it was a crimson and silver marble. Mana and lava swirled together, mixing until it was difficult to tell one from the other. By the time Demorrah cooled, mana was so much a part of it that it grew quickly. Evolution moved far more quickly than it has on earth, and Demorrah is actually quite young as a planet. In only a few thousand years after the planet cooled, the first magical creatures were formed. These slimes, born from concentrated pools of mana which had been slowly collecting in pockets underground and on the surface, became the basis for every magical creature that followed. They instinctively sought out and consumed anything warm-blooded. Sometimes, the consumed creatures would survive, but were changed. These affected creatures would begin to seek out mana pools. Why they did this is unknown, but it is hypothesized that they either understood the loss of their magical abilities, the mana was addictive in itself, or something about being changed by the slimes made it imperative to their survival.   Sentience sprung up quickly, and with it, the first wars. Some were religious, some resource based, but one of the worst wars was the Naliri war against the humans, who were quickly growing in number. Humans were societally advanced, ambitious, determined, and violent by nature, making them a serious threat to even magically inclined creatures. They were also not above utilizing raw mana to give themselves temporary magical abilities. During this war, in which those with magic banded together under common banners against those without, a place was created by the Naliri which grew to become Vanivalia Academy. Many thousands on both sides died, and many races of magical creatures ended up enslaved.   About a hundred years later, the centaurs, which had been used as pack animals and mounts, decided to stage a rebellion against their human masters. This was a battle they ultimately won, but since that day, very few have seen centaurs. They have been in hiding, becoming more and more reclusive and feral over the years. They have been known to attack anyone who comes across them. Even in the academy, which is widely renowned as a safe place for all races, very few have been accepted into the school. It is at this point that we meet our protagonist.
