Boseo

Boseo is a photosynthetic organism from the ancient seas of Almaishah. Boseo lived about 480 million years go.
[Creature design by Bent Hovind - no relation]

Basic Information

Anatomy

Boseo has three major sections, the leaf, stem and the rhizoid. The leaf is a circular structure with simple vascularization that transports sugars from the leaf to the rest of the organism, and it is the primary photosynthetic organ. The stem is a structural support helping the leaf reach sunlight in the shallow seas. The rhizoid is responsible for uptake of minerals from the substrate, anchoring the rest of the organism, and sending up new stalks. The leaf is also a reproductive structure.

Biological Traits

Photosynthesis is performed by a combination of retinal on the surface of the cell membrane under a cell wall of peptidoglycan/murein, and a purple pigment similar in function to chlorophyl. Retinal is used to help drive ATP metabolization, while the other energy derived from photosynthesis goes toward producing sugars.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction is asexual by new stalks being sent up by the rhizoid, as well as releasing reproductive cells through the center of the leaf, which are then carried away by currents, to hopefully land in shallow water with enough nutrients in the substrate and enough sunlight to support photosynthesis.

Growth Rate & Stages

It takes about 80 hours to reach the maximum size from a new stalk on the rhizoid, assuming optimal growing conditions. New colonies spread by dispersion usually take about 120 hours to get their first stalk to full size and then the first few additional stalks will start growing some 60 hours later, and be full size in a further 160-170 hours.

Ecology and Habitats

Boseo is a primary producer and the base of food change all through the shallow waters of Almaishah.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

While the organism has no neurons, it can and does turn it's leaf to approximately face the sun, although the range of motion is very limited.
