About

Appearance

An ancient but mortal daiten created by Lord Qi herself, Balthazar's body is marked by old age; wrinkles, sagging skin, and a hunched posture mark the many centuries of his life since he became mortal. At full height, he stands 10'8", but his bent over posture brings him down closer to 10'5". His skin is mottled in blues forming a gradient of lighter, paler colors from the nose, to darker, slight more saturated ones going down to the legs and feet. Cloud-light patterns cut across this gradient, and white speckles like stars scatter across the darker blues, and form tighter clusters over the darkest patches. His gills, chest hole, and inner ears are metallic gold in color. The two curved horns on his head and the six spikes arrayed in two rows down his throat are black in color.

Balthazar's most eye-catching traits are the thorn whips that come over his shoulders and wrap around both arms. Like his long thago tail, they are black and thorned, and each spike is tipped with gold, almost as if the spines were dipped in liquid metal. He has distinctive scarring across his face, particularly around the mouth and eye on the right side of his head; torn lips expose golden teeth and black gums, while the severe damage to the eye has rendered it blind, but intact.

As a space-faring Captain of a Junker ship, Balthazar's apparel ranges greatly depending on his needs, but he primarily sports a white, sharp-looking Captain's uniform, which has been modified and tailored to accommodate his unique anatomy, such as allowing his long tail to hang out and his thorn whips to move freely. This uniform has several variants; the most basic variety puts practicality above all else, and sports many pockets, loops, and other useful attachments to enable work and movement on a working ship. There is also an armored variant, which boasts reinforced fibers, sown-in shielding, and metal plating over top the rest. The first version is intended for special occasions, a dressed-up uniform with gold trim and tassels, shiny buttons, and black embroidered patterns. Ironically, Balthazar uses these last two for much the same purpose: making a good first impression. Being impervious to most sources of damage, the armored uniform serves no real purpose to him, but it may appear intimidating to others that do not know this about him or his kind.

Though once a man of peace, Balthazar now wields an arsenal of weapons in addition to the vicious thorns on his body. He wears a large rifle holstered to his back, and a smaller pistol holstered at his hip. Both fire plasma, but the former is an automatic weapon, while the latter is semiautomatic.

Personality

The name "Balthazar" did not always belong to him. Once, he was known as Amara, and Amara was a very different daiten from the one he has become; Amara was a Lifebringer, who cherished his creations and all living things. He would have been described as somewhat mercurial, but still loving, someone who would be hard on you just to see you grow and become better, but never push things too far. Amara had much love in his life, and much love to share, but his faith was shattered and his trust eroded during the late years of Heaven, and he withdrew into himself, into solitude. It was during this time that he became embittered and resentful, and his love withered away to nothingness, replaced instead with hatred. By the time Heaven fell, he was little more than the shell of his former self; the collapse of his home propelled him to a new world, and it was here that he remade himself into Balthazar, taking on the persona of an antihero, someone willing to play dirty to get results. Now, it is often difficult to know what he is thinking, or to perceive his moods. He maintains a cool, unperturbed air when around strangers, and only opens up with his crew. Gone is the kindly Amara, who would plead with others for help, who would forgive those who wronged her. Balthazar is a cold blooded man who asks no one to do the job he can do himself, and he harbors no patience nor mercy for anyone who would cross him, or bring harm to his crew.

Story

Among the first daitens Lord Qi brought to life, Amara lived for some centuries before deciding to become a Lifebringer, and create new generations of daitens to populate Heaven and enjoy the peace and prosperity of the realm. He experimented with many approaches to creating daitens, but slowed down in the early years before the outbreak of the war, due to increasing tensions between daitens and agma. He instead focused on his own life, a mortal one, and the love he shared with his two partners, Drusus and , who were both warriors. Amara created Drusus, his first warrior daiten, and over the centuries they grew close. was a daiten created by Theseus, a close friend to Amara and fellow Lifebringer.

Unfortunately, a day came that changed everything for Amara - went missing, assumed "killed in action" by Drusus. Drusus did not initially tell Amara of her vanishing, so when he found it, he was furious. He demanded Drusus go search for her, but Drusus refused on the basis that it would jeopardize too many other warriors. For several months Amara tried to appeal to other warriors, but Drusus always shut him down, and ultimately none of the warriors ever acted to assist. Only the elderly Theseus made an attempt, but his body had become so frail compared to his glory days as a warrior himself, that he collapsed soon after heading out. Amara brought him safely home, but it was this moment that confirmed to Amara he could no longer put faith in his kin.

He retreated into intense isolation, and nursed his resentment like a mold, letting it grow and multiply in the darkness of his mind. The concentration of negative energy induced corruption in him, only further pushing him to remain isolated, even from Theseus. When news broke of Gohr's corruption and the discovery of dead Agma in his home, Amara found he was not surprised. The bad blood had been brewing for so long, and in Amara's mind, the agma's accusations were right - Lord Qi favored her children, and daitens were selfish creatures.

When the young and naive Thalhassa came to him, seeking his skills as a Lifebringer, he decided to play along, and sow more seeds of discord. He took her plea to make Ark a true soul, and twisted her desire; his corrupted touch in turn corrupted Ark's body, and destroyed Thalhassa's dream of ever bonding with her so-called magnum opus. This would be his final act of creation - Amara spent the remainder of the war on the run.

He would suffer again before it was over, however; in the final days of the war, Balthazar came upon Drusus, facing three agma who held him prisoner. Amara was forced to watch, helpless, as the Agma cut off his divine arms, claiming he did not deserve this mark of Lord Qi's love. Though still angry with Drusus, Amara could not bear to see him killed; he rushed into their midst, and tried to fight them off, but he lacked the skill and the physicality to fend off even one agma, never mind three. They struck him down, wounding his face, and casting him from Heaven itself. He knows not what became of Drusus.

Amara spent the first several months after the Fall of Heaven recovering from his wounds, alone on a peaceful alien jungle world. He had already given up his immortality to become a Lifebringer, but the modifications left behind by the agma weapons only served to remind him of his fragility. A wound to the right side of his face left his teeth and gums partially exposed, and stole the sight from his eye. While his body recovered, his mind stayed in a kind of frozen shock, and emotions built up behind a dam inside his heart. He wandered the planet he found himself on aimlessly for weeks, until one day he came upon something exciting: living sapient creatures. (New paragraph here.) The planet's surface was already littered with the ruins of some ancient civilization, but he could clearly see their age and determine that whoever made the structures was long gone. On this day, however, he found evidence of recent activity, and followed it back to its origin, a sprawling complex of new buildings, bustling with strange creatures of many various shapes and sizes. Amara took to observing them, and soon discovered these aliens were here for the ruins, searching through dig sites for valuables. Most importantly, they had a way off the planet in the form of a single launch-and-land pad. (New paragraph here.) Seeing this, Amara formulated a plan to escape and start a new life, one with purpose. Through his observations, he could tell this place was important, but it was also small and relatively defenseless, and the inhabitants lacked the necessary armaments to effectively keep an entity like him at bay. Thus, he attacked the base and took it hostage, threatening to destroy the pad if he was not equipped with his own ship and crew and allowed to leave. It was during this attack that Amara's mutation manifested, giving him a means through which to attack and defend himself, something he never had before. His ploy worked - the importance of the location allowed him to twist the arms of the entire junking fleet in the immediate area, forcing them to shed crew and give up an old ship that itself looked ready for the junk pile.

And so began Amara's final chapter. The vessel, nicknamed Detritus for its cobbled together nature and general garbage appearance, was crewed entirely by the misfits of other crews, the members that captains and crews decided they would happily discard given the opportunity. As a result, Amara found himself surrounded by people much like himself, and his first goal was to earn their trust and loyalty by treating them with the respect and care they were never shown previously. With little knowledge of the wider solar system, never mind the intergalactic web of civilizations and factions around him, he leaned into the vessel's original purpose: junking. Amara took the Detritus to a nearby trash planet marked in the ship's internal map, and set about having his rookie crew do the one thing they knew how, ensuring they would at least be comfortable in work they were familiar with. (New paragraph here.) It was on this trash planet that he met (mechanic and robot names), and convinced them to join his crew to the benefit of all three. Paragraph(s) describing the character's story since then.
