Vorheim Settlement in D&D | World Anvil

Vorheim

A large city in Dumont's southern Dun Fjorlag valley and the seat of power for the Thane of Dun Fjorlag. The city is located in a gargantuan cavern with relatively few large entrances, thus Vorheim is relatively secure save for mild threats of savage valley clans and underdark caverns. From Vorheim, the Thane of Dun Fjorlag protects their valley by way of Windriders; griffon-riding dwarves wielding quivers of longspears for mid-air jousting.   The city enjoys healthy swaths of arable land unknown to most dwarven cities and makes considerable profit from exported meat and agricultural goods to subterranean dwarven communities.   Visitors to Vorheim will see rams and bulettes serving as pack animals, and walk under the watchful gaze of the griffon-mounted Windriders' guild.

Government

The city is currently ruled by the Bronzebeard clan and governed by Lord Magdek Bronzebeard, who rules as Thane of the Dun Fjorlag valley.   Like all other cities of Dumont, Vorheim is sworn to the Firebrand's of Deepholme and its Lord of Stone.

History

The city was recently, and for many generations, by the Thunderfury Clan. It was finally lead by Thane Galron Thunderfury until his rumoured death at the hands of his own advisor and wizard, Castellan Riga and Lady Amelie Bournival. Much mystery surrounds his death; the perpetrators were never formally accused and his family heirloom, the Twinblade of House Thunderfury remains missing.   In the unrest that followed Galron's extended absence, Lord Magdek Bronzebeard brought a large contingent of men from Highrock Settlement and overthrew Thunderfury House, claiming their weakness forfeited their right to rule.

Known Landmarks

The Gateway. A steep switchback at the colossal cavern mouth that forms the city's primary entrance. The gate itself has been worked to resemble a large dwarven head. The switchback is protected by iron portcullises, Bronzebeard guardsmen and windriders atop their flying steeds.   Thunderfury Manor. A central manor of stone in the city's central cavern built by clan Thunderfury before they were overthrown. In a show of respect for the historical (now faded) strength of Thunderfury, the Bronzebeard's left the manor's name intact.   The Griffon's Roost. Stone tower that stretches floor-to-ceiling in the cavern and features dozens of platforms from which griffons and airships take off and dock.   Onyrist Church. A large, multi-tiered square building topped by a colossal purple geode bleeding light into the sky.   Blackwater River. Splits the city in two, ends in a waterfall outside Vorheim and enters from deep in the mountains. Duergar and drow often travel on this river, and only fools travel without their help.   The Wandering Eagle. A popular traveler's tavern filled with music, tales and strong dwarven ale.   The Howling Demon. A tavern popular among the city's rougher folk. Known for its doorway of blackness carved to resemble a large demon's head with an open maw.
