Session 5 - Wyvern Tor

General Summary

After seeing Mirna Dendrar and her children safely home, the morning sun has arrived. Breven notices a beautiful blond Elven female enter the Shrine of Luck. "I need to pray." he informs the party. "Get some breakfast at the Stonehill and I will meet you at the Lionshield Coster."   Breven enters the Shrine of Luck and finds the female elf praying. He kneels next to her and prays as well. After they finish, they stand and she turns to Breven. “Good morning.” She says with a nod. “I am Sister Garaele.”
“Good morning,” he replies. “I am Breven.”
“Well met Breven. What brings you to Phandalin?”
“Work. Caravan escort mostly.” He says.
“What is your usual duty with such work?”
“I take care of people when I can” he replies.
Her eyebrow raises when she spots his holy symbol of Tymora. “Indeed. I see you are of the faith!” She turns back to the altar. “Perhaps Tymora has sent you here to bolster my own. I have not been very successful completing my duties of late. I have been searching for a goblin shrine in the north without success.
Furthermore, I have been trying to recover some information about a long lost spellbook. There is a banshee to the east that may have information, but she won’t speak with me. She’s harmless if treated with respect, but she was an elf in life and I think I remind her too much of her former life and so she hides from me when I approach.”
She turns to Breven, “I would be greatful if you would consider helping me with these quests.” Breven nods and replies. “My friends and I have some unfinished business to attend to, but after that we can talk about it some more.”
“My thanks,” she says with a smile as he leaves.   Meanwhile, the party has breakfast at the Stonehill Inn. Reg is sitting at the end of the bench next to Rake. Still wrapped in his ropes, he has his hood pulled over his head and looks like a halfling in form only. However, as Trilena Stonehill sets a plate of fresh biscuits on the table, Reg slips a green hand from beneath his ropes and quickly snatches a biscuit off the plate.
Trilena stops and peers into his hood spotting his small red eyes.
“By Selune’s Tears!” she gasps. “Is that a…?”
Rake shrugs, “Yeah, no worries though. I got him under control.”
“Well! Bring a filthy goblin in my inn?” she huffs.
“Look at me ownself!” Rake retorts sitting there with one boot and no shirt. “He won’t cause no trouble.”
“Reg not cause trouble.” The ranger grumbles.
“Well he best not!” She says shaking her finger at Rake and storms back off to the kitchen.
Reg slips under the table and gnaws on a sausage link.   After morning prayers, Breven visits the Lionshield Coster to purchase a shield and chain shirt. The rest of the party joins him there as Cullen decides to visit the Temple of Chauntea.
Linene Greywind tells the party she’ll have a shipment ready for escort to Triboar whenever the party would like to take it. Exil tells Linene that they discovered more of her goods at the Redbrand Hideout. She offers the party a 50 gp reward if they return the merchandise to her store. Rake asks to borrow her cart to haul the goods in.   Before returning to Tresendar Manor, the party decides to meet with Sildar Winterhall. Inside the townmaster's hall they meet Harbin Wester. Harbin berates the party for causing trouble and spilling blood on the streets of the town. He says the Redbrands will retailiate when the party leaves. "Why don't you do something useful like kill the orcs hiding out in the Wyvern Tor?" he says. "I'll pay you a hundred gold dragons to remove them!" That wench, Darathra Shendrel from Triboar is supposed to keep the roads from here to there clear and her militia is doing a piss poor job! Should you find yourselves going to Triboar, I'd like you to deliver a message to her for me." He stands and farts loudly and waddles off.   The party returns to the Redbrand Hideout. Rake removes the ropes from Reg but doesn't give him his weapons back. As they enter the cavern Jowynn stops as she hears the whispers that the others had claimed to hear before. She stops and listens. The gibbering voice tells her that because the party provided so much food, it wants to offer payment to the party. It tells her that if they all go after Glasstaff, he will escape and she must remain in the cavern alone. The voice also informs her the north bridge is false. She has Rainar test the bridge and he does find that any significant weight placed on the bridge would have brought it down into the crevasse. Jowynn decides to wait alone in the cavern as the rest of the party heads to the wizard's laboratory.   A strange creature crawls down from the top of the cavern. A Nothic.

It comes face to face with Jowynn. "Waits here." it tells her. The Nothic climbs down into the crevasse and retrieves a magical rapier that belonged to Aldith Tresendar. The sword is named "Talon" and the hilt is a flyinig hawk with spread wings as the cross-guard. "Final payment."   The party enters the Wizard Laboratory and sees a rat scurry across the floor. They find all kinds of glass tubes and bubbling beakers with coils and alembics, retorts, distillation coils, and other alchemical devices. Making an Arcana check, Exil determines Glasstaff is brewing potions of Invisibility.
"Not anymore." Rake states. The dwarf rushes in and smashes all the lab equipment with his maul. Glass and tubing rains down all over the back of the lab.   There is a door leading to the east. They open the door and find the wizard's bedchamber....empty.   Meanwhile Jowynn spots a light in the dark cavern to the north hastily making its way towards her. She hides around the corner and a man wielding a Staff made of Glass nearly runs into her.

"Oh my!" He stammers. "You startled me! You must be with those other adventurers?"   She draws her new rapier. "Indeed I am."   "Well met!" he says with a bow. "I am Iarno Albrek at your service." She lungs at him and he steps back raising his staff in defense. "Wait! What are you doing? I mean you no harm my dear." Jowynn lowers her weapon seeing the wizard is not going to attack. "Lets go back to the north." she says to him. He nods reluctantly. They turn and walk back into the cavern. Jowynn notices he keeps looking up to the ceiling.   (Wexxus! Where are you? Help me! Remember I fed you! Attack this elf so I can escape!) Glasstaff thinks. He hears the whispers. (They fed me more! Hahaha!) Albrek sighs. (You treacherous Nothic!)   The party finds the secret door at the back of the bed chamber and ascends the steps to another secret door leading to the storage area where the stolen goods are kept. They come out into the cavern and find Glasstaff waiting with Jowynn. Exil relieves the wizard of his staff.   They turn him over to Sildar who is furious with him. "I sent you here to help establish order and you took advantage of these town people to fund your own devices! You will be taken to Neverwinter to face justice!"   The party returns the stolen goods to the Lionshield Coster and gets paid 50 gp. Rainar visits Halia Thornton and tells her they have successfully captured Glasstaff. "Excellent news!" she beams. "See I knew the minute you walked in the door of the exchange that you were a man that could get things done and get them done expeditiously!" She reaches in her drawer and pulls out 100 gold dragons for Rainar fulfilling the contract.   That night Exil stays at the Inn, Reg and Drake spend the night in the keep on the hill, while Jowynn returns to the Sleeping Giant to play knuckle bones with the locals. Cullen returns to the Shrine of Luck wondering if Breven will show up. He does not.   Breven was invited to dinner by Garaele. He shows up at her house next to the Shrine and she invites him in for some wine and then later they have soup, bread and pastries. Garaele tells Breven the church has asked her to find information about the location of an ancient spellbook that belonged to a legendary mage known as Bowgentle. A banshee named Agatha that dwells to the east in the woods, north of Conyberry may know the last owner of the spellbook. She hopes that Breven can convince the banshee to give him the information.   She takes Breven upstairs to her bedchamber and gives him a silver comb. "Present this to Agatha as a gift in exchange for answering your question." Breven says he will do his best.

7th day of Tarsakh   The next day the party decides they will head east to the Wyvern Tor to fight the orcs, investigate the Old Owl Watchtower, and visit the lair of the banshee, Agatha. They arrive at the sparsely vegetated and rocky foothills of the Sword Mountains and spend the night. Dark clouds gather overhead as the night passes and a slight drizzle greets them in the morning. Reg leads them into the crags.   8th day of Tarsakh   Reg tells the party that the Wyvern Tor is a prominent landmark that can be seen for miles around and that the Tor was home to a nest of large and viscous Wyverns. A band of adventurers dealt with them many years ago and they never returned, but now various monsters use it as a lair and currently the orcs of the Many Arrows Tribe use the cave as an outpost.   The party finds a single guard on watch outside the cave and quickly dispatch him. Jowynn sneaks inside the cave to see how many are there, but trips on an alarm wire and alerts the denizens of their presence. The party rushes in to attack. Two orcs attack Rake as Cullen turns into a bear. Exil casts firebolt and Rainar moves into to attack. He is struck trying to pull back. The cave is filled with seven orcs, one of them being the leader Brughor Axebiter, wielding a great axe. In the back of the cave, is a huge ogre called Gog. There is a fire pit in the middle of the cave. They are roasting a stolen pig. Breven casts Sacred Flame at an orc.   Seeing all the orcs and the ogre, Exil casts fireball from the spell scroll they took from Glasstaff. Gog's chest explodes in flames and he screams in pain and anger. Another orc falls over burned to death. Gog charges Rake and Jowynn comes to Rake's side and runs the Ogre through with Talon. Gog topples into the fire pit and dies.   The remaining orcs surround Cullen in bear form and begin stabbing him. Cullen mauls several of them. Breven heals Rake and he rushes in recklessly and smashes Axebiter in the chest finishing him off and ending the battle in victory!
