Session 4 - Redbrand Hideout
General Summary
The party fights four Redbrands in the cellar, killing two of them. The other two are tied up and forgotten about after the party discovers a secret passage.
The passage leads to a deep dark crevasse. A cold breeze wafts up from below with a slight hint of decaying flesh. Breven hears strange whispers echoing about the cavern. There is 100 ft long tunnel that leads to the forest behind the hill and north of Phandalin.
They cross the near bridge over the chasm and down a set of stairs. At the bottom they enter another barracks. It has three bugbears and the goblin they saw on the Triboar Trail cutting some horse meat right before the party was ambushed by the Cragmaw Gobbies.
Exil enters the room but is unable to trick the bugbears into thinking they are redbrands. The ornery humanoids attack. The party throws spells and arrows into the room, as Rainar, Cullen, and Rake charge in.
The battle is intense. Reg - the Goblin Ranger, having been treated poorly by the bugbears and seeing an opportunity to make some powerful allies, attacks the bugbears as well.
Cullen again transforms into a large brown bear and mauls two of the bugbears. Rake finishes off the last one.
The party takes a short rest, while tying up Reg as they are unsure if he can be trusted. He is a model prisoner.
He tells the party that the Spider sent the bugbears to Glasstaff to help get rid of the Adventurers that had come to town.
After the rest, they go back to the cellar to retrieve the red cloaks off the ruffians. They discover the two they left tied up have escaped.
They collect two red capes and return to the common room to the north. They enter and find six Redbrands sitting around drinking, playing cards and waiting for dinner to be ready. Beefstew and bread.
Rake ties Reg to the hook in the wall holding a lantern. The Redbrands look up and ask who the party is. They tell them they are new recruits.
The bandits believe their story. One of them is suspicious having heard about the party and Glasstaff ordering them to dispatch them. But Exil is able to convince him they are legitimate by mentioning the Spider. Reg asks Jowynn if she wouldn't mind fetching him a piece of bread.
After the ruffians relax, the party attacks them by surprise! It is a tough battle but they take them all down.
After that, the party is exhausted. They decide to use the tunnel to retreat outside and spend the night. Exil hears the mysterious whispering in the cavern. "Sorcerer......"
The Lost Patrol
They make camp for the night by a small creek. However, just as the first watch begins, Rake hears several orcs moving through the forest.
They discover the party and there is a stand off. The orcs say they are from the Many Arrows Tribe and heading East to find their leader Brughor Axebiter who has a camp at the Wyvern Tor to the East. The party tries to tell the orcs they are heading West in the wrong direction. This angers the orcs and one throws a javlin at them, hitting Exil in the leg. They demand 50 gold dragons from the party or they will attack.
Breven tells them that they don't have the fifty gold, but they can have the 3 gold teeth they possess. He tells them the teeth are worth 10 gp each. The orc motions Breven over and examines the teeth. He grunts in acceptance.
"Fair enough." he barks He takes the teeth and says "We go East now!" They take off heading west.
6th day of Tarsakh The next day the party reenters the hideout. Reg tells them there is an armory to the north and they have the key for it from the bugbears. So they decide to investigate the armory. This time Rainar hears the eerie whispers in the cavern. "Warrior.....long pike he wields...." They find the armory and a door to the south. Past that door they find the Tresendar Family Crypt. As they enter the room, skeletons leap out and attack the party for the intrusion of their resting place. Breven is able to turn two of them and Rake and Rainar take them out. To the east is a prison where they find the two escaped Redbrands hiding. They fight to the death. In the cells they find Mirna Dendrar, wife of the murdered woodcarver, Thel Dendrar and their two children, Nars a 13 year old boy and Nilsa, an 8 year old girl. Mirna hugs Breven thanking Tymora for sending him to save them from a life of slavery. The party escorts the family back to their home in Phandalin. As the party exits the Dendrar house, Breven notices an Elven woman with golden hair and purple robes exit a house down the street. She turns and enters the Shrine of Luck.
