Session 3 - Phandalin
General Summary
In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse Inn of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room
is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity.
The party has arrived at Phandalin. Finding Barthen's Provisions closed, they drop the oxen off on the town green and secure food and lodging for the night.
Sildar confides in the party that he is a member of the Lord's Alliance. He agreed to accompany Gundren to Phandalin as he also had business here. He had sent an agent to Phandalin over two months ago to scout out the town and make sure it was stable. But suddenly all communication had stopped and Sildar came here to find out what happened. Sildar's contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order. After the Lords' Alliance received no word from Iarno, Sildar decided to investigate. He had also asked Breven to investigate wherever he could to try and find out what became of Iarno.
Elsa, a gossipy barmaid (fun, happy, and pretty):
"Daran Edermath, the Orchard keeper, is a former adventurer. You should visit him, I'd wager he would have some adventures for you!"Breven overhears Narth, an old farmer: (big heavy beard, dirty hands, floppy hat)
"Sister Garaele, who oversees the Shrine of Luck, recently left town for a few days, then returned wounded and exhausted."She recently healed the farmer's leg. Not wanting to call it an evening just yet, Jowynn, Exil, Breven, and Cullen head to the Sleep Giant Tap house where they find several of the local ruffians hanging out, gambling and drinking. They meet the owner Grista, a dwarven female and Cullen promises to fix her up with Rake. After several ales, they return to the main square of the town. Cullen does not want to sleep in the Inn and looks for an available barn. Breven convinces him not to trespass and instead invites him to stay at the Shrine of Luck. Whether to keep him company or to make sure he doesn't take any coins from the alter, Breven spends the night at the shrine as well. 5th day of Tarsakh The next day the party delivers the goods to their merchants and get paid. Rainar Arnox pays a visit to Halia Thornton, a seemingly powerful woman in town. She knows the Arnox family and offers to pay Rainar and his comrades 100 gp to remove the town villain, Glasstaff from his seat of power. Trilena, the innkeeper's wife hears the party discussing the Redbrands:
"Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a ten day ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too."Freda, a weaver, joins the conversation:
"The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange. They don't want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it."Meanwhile the rest of the party visits Darn Edermath, a retired adventurer that runs an apple orchard. He tells them he wants to see Glasstaff stopped as well and that they have a hideout in an abandoned manor on the edge of town. He also tells them there is an ancient Watchtower to the east of town where undead are attacking miners in the hills. The party is ambushed by the redbrands at high noon. There is a battle in the streets but the thugs are no match for the party. Cullen transforms into a large brown bear and shreds a couple of the bandits. They take two surviving members to Sildar who locks them up in the keep. The captured redbrands tell the party how to find the entrance to the hideout. They also inform them that Glasstaff is taking orders from someone called The Spider. The party travels up the hill to Tresendar Manor and enters the Redbrands lair in the cellar.
Rewards Granted
Everyone earned 10gp from their respective coster.
Missions/Quests Completed
The party learns the Redbrand safe house lies under Tresendar Manor, the ruin at the Northwest edge of town on a hill over looking Phandalin. Hailia Thornton will pay the party 100gp to remove Glasstaff from power.
Daran Edermath tells the party prospectors in the hills northeast of Phandalin say that someone is digging around in the ruins known as Old Owl Watchtower. More disturbingly, several prospectors have reported being chased from the area by undead. He asks the characters to visit the ruins, a couple days march northeast of Phandalin, and find out who's there and what they're up to. Daran knows that the ruins are an old watchtower of an ancient magical empire known as Netheril, and he worries that dangerous magic might be dormant there.
