Fluorescent Caves

The fluorescent caves are a system of caves carved into the mountainous cliffs below the Kylin Pass bordering on the Fluorescent Sea. They were carved by the power waves crashing against the cliffs for years on end. Dubbed the Fluorescent Caves due to the fluorescent bacteria and other species that live in the caves. They are also a common breeding ground for marine species and are a very common attraction for the rich to visit the inside of; Mages have also been known to visit the cave to learn Magic in its many forms, which is also due to the fact both the Kylin Pass and the Fluorescent Caves are under the control of the Mage's Guild since the Nomadic Restructuring.

Geography

The Fluorescent Caves have a distinct geographic formation. Generally, when spoken of, it refers to both the cave system and the sea right outside of it. The sea, a small and fairly shallow portion of the ocean carved in between the mountains of the Kylin Pass. It is a fairly smooth ocean floor, filled with sand. The caves themselves were carved into the cliffs of the mountains by powerful waves. The ocean waves dug into the caves for around 3000 years, at an accelerated rate, to tunnel through the mountain. The variation across tides and time also lead to the ocean covering the entrances to the caves during high tide and leaving large areas of oxygen, where people could survive until the tides went down. The full extense of the caves is unknown as most people, and Mages have not felt the need to explore the lower ranges of the caves mostly due to the fact a large portion of the caves are completely underwater at all times. Some entrances to the caves are always completely underwater, the highest entrance remains mostly uncovered until high tide. The floors of the caves are lined with sand, though the walls and ceilings of the caves are made from rocks. The sea is mostly salt, however, portions of the deeper cave, especially those far from the entrances, have been found to have pure water from the surface within "lakes".

Fauna & Flora

Fauna

The Fluorescent Caves are known for their distinct animal inhabitants, both within the caves and in the Fluorescent Sea, the sea just off of the coast of the Kylin Pass, which is often considered to be an equal part of Fluorescent Caves due to its proximity and the fact that it is considered under the control of Mage's Guild. The fluorescent area itself has been seen to have a variety of unique creatures. Many of the creatures that fill the water are known for their tendency to have some form of fluorescent element to their design. There are a variety of bacteria and algae that can be found in the water, though they are most often seen glowing in the caves. Fish, octopus, and other sea creatures will all have some form of striping or color on them that glows fluorescent. Many of the more complex organisms are able to control when and how they glow. The nature of glowing creatures has allowed the development for hunters, such as osprey, to hunt in the sea; however, osprey are also known for being able to distinguish from poisonous fluorescent versus decoy fluorescent prey. However, the main known fauna of in the caves themselves is the variety of bacteria floating in and along the water.

Flora

Lining the cliffs and with very strong tides, there is very little vegetation in the sea, but there are a couple of different elements in the caves. Edging on the line of fauna and flora, algae are the most common form of plant found in the caves. Algae are also found lining the cliff edges up to the top of the tide lines and the walls most strongly. The algae are also known for their properties within the water as well as being difficult to collect from the water. Within the caves themselves, there are a variety of vines growing along the inner walls above the upper tide line. Furthermore, seagrasses and other ocean-floor plants are growing both on the sandy floor and the rocky walls. However, the power of the waves and sea around the caves have limited the growth of plants within the Fluorescent Sea and the Fluorescent Caves.

Natural Resources

The fluorescent caves are not known for having extensive resources, the main use of the area for the collection of fluorescent materials. While under the control of the Mage's Guild, fishers have been known to seek out the fauna of the Fluorescent Sea. Beyond the species living in it, both the sea and the caves are mostly lacking natural resources; without inhabitants, without inhabitants, a lot of the lower regions of the area remain unexplored.
