Milan Rapid Transit
Milan's rapid transportation network consists of two main systems - local bus and tram service, which never crosses over zone lines, and the much larger regional hypertrain and metro system.
There are four metro lines, which are completely underground high-speed electric railways. These lines have closely packed underground stations, sometimes placed as densely as every major block, and generally only go through the most densely populated sections of Milan's Gold and Blue zones.
In contrast, the twelve hypertrain lines service much further out into the Red Zone and the area surrounding Milan. These are super high-speed electric trains, suspended from an overhead monorail which is elevated at least one story off the ground, and in some places, is very high up indeed. Hypertrain stations are spaced much further apart than metro stations, and generally a district or commune only has one station.
The Skyway is a section of the hypertrain system which runs from the Porta Vittoria station in northern Calvairate, southeast of Milan's Gold Zone, to the Bovisa and Villapizzone stations in the northwest. This section is suspended very high, sometimes 100m or more above street level, and travels through the heart of Milan. A total of six different lines use this section of the hypertrain network, and several of them also have destinations in the Red Zone, so security at these stations is extra sharp. The S14 hypertrain line is unique in that it basically only travels the Skyway section, is the only train line strictly limited to Blue and Gold ID card holders, and is aimed at a luxury tourism experience instead of just rapid transportation.
Corporations also run corporate hypertrains for their employees, from the public stations directly to high-security stations within skyscrapers. It is not unheard of for very rich and powerful individuals to own private hypertrain cars, as well.
