As a Minor role, you can make either Wisdom (Religion) or Intelligence (History) or Arcana (Intelligence) checks to recall information with proficiency, if you already have proficiency you can do so with expertise (double the proficiency bonus). If you already have expertise you roll with advantage. As a Major role, you can choose two from Wisdom (Religion), Intelligence (History) and Arcana (Intelligence) checks to recall information with proficiency, if you already have proficiency you can do so with expertise (double the proficiency bonus). If you already have Expertise you roll with advantage.
At level 8 you can make these recall checks with advantage. If you already have advantage, you get a plus 5 to your roll. In addition, you can choose one more Check to have proficiency in.

Context is key, when adventuring. Knowing beforehand if you should be on guard or look for secret doors is a boon only history can tell, so it is always good to have a walking encyclopedia with you.
