Gwybod Scholar
As magic is a restricted art form (for the ‘safety’ of the masses) it means that those who study it are either wealthy enough to have the proper education so that they can perform the spells safely or they are a professional. To be a professional you usually have to have gone to a school or form of education to study magic, so only those who are rich enough to afford it or have been selected as ‘gifted’ are able to advance in a career in magic.
Like any industry there are many pathways for a mage to go into, the most frequent are in medicine, construction, entertainment, scholars. These roles will have a mage when working at a high level, for example for the construction having a mage on site will be to assist with securing and fortifying structures, and for the scholars it is divination that will be using their magic to gain knowledge. In all professions a mage is considered to be one of the highest levels as they use complex highly specified magic that is difficult to control.
But the most respected type of mage is those that are scholars and specialise in divination to gain knowledge and expand their minds. One of the original Elite was a scholar, said to be one of the wises mages in history and he used this knowledge to lead the revolution that the elite staged. When they were finally in power, he set a hierarchy aside from the firsts and seconds (city figureheads) so that everyone including the other scholars would have to climb the hierarchy to advance their knowledge. Not many people climb up and reach the higher levels that are the most protected as to be a Gwybod Scholar. These Gwybod scholars are the most respected members of society and are often the first wise (Yr gyntaf doeth) of the city.
