Barkgull

Barkgull is a quaint and curious state on the northern shore of Wispwood. Heavy walls, a bustling centre, and a glorious statue of Vytali characterize the capital. Outside the capital city the region is dotted with small villages whose people work the land and gather resources, and each province is peeked by a wizard’s tower that houses the governor. Across the landscape, various guilds erect universities devoted to different arcane arts. The government is exclusively headed by the aristocratic wizard class who use their affluence and deep-rooted cultural esteem to govern the land.   The population is one that values passion and craftsmanship: almost all citizens have a love of tinkering and learning. Despite this cultural ubiquitousness, the state is very clearly divided into three distinct economic classes: the ruling wizard class, the craftsmen class (or alchemist class, given the large number of producers of alchemical items in the state), and the labor or farming class. The non-gnome population, mostly halfling, primarily make up the latter.   Social mobility is rather limited; however, it is possible to move up a class by attaining an apprenticeship. Although there is no legislation requiring it, it is socially frowned upon to own a providence which does not produce a “prodigy” from time to time, and as such most governors make an attempt at providing opportunities to the people to show their potential for academia. Some do this by hosting competitions, enforcing standardized testing, or enacting full scale public education programs. Additionally, foreigners may immigrate to the nation if approved by a governing wizard, usually by the merit of the applicant’s arcane knowledge.   The country is currently at war with Xagolae in a territorial dispute over the resource rich islands of the Barkgull Archipelago. Barkgull gathers resources for magical components in the plains, and Xagolae uses the woods as their primary means of domestic lumber, given the lack of forestry on Crablack. This war has lasted a few years, but historically these skirmishes have gone on and off for centuries.
